Curated topics #19
Comments
I temporarily addressed this in 3a8c350. Right now, this content is populated through a configuration file: each curated topic has the following fields: If you're able to supply additional curated topics now, please do- otherwise I'm going to finish implementing featured topics when I do the migration to Wagtail. |
Adding a "wagtail" label for things to implement when we add a CMS. |
There are a couple other metadata items to provide in the config file:
A byline will be added after the narrative content, by the author. Probably don't need a special addition to the config. We will need to implement a pilot set of featured topics if at all possible by December 10. My target was 10 but if we can do 5, that would at least demonstrate the function/feature/content pages nicely. |
NOT a phase-2 issue. Needs to have the pilot set of 5-10 topics on the page where all the curated topics can be viewed. This page will have a callout for folks to participate if interested. Marcia and PWG are working to get these written up quickly. |
See issue #84 |
For now, this page can be like the "About the Portal" page which links to a "coming soon" page. It will be good to have something that happens when people click on links to view all curated topics. from anywhere on the site. |
Updated narrative 12/8 for this About style page on Box for reference. Here is the narrative to go on the BMRC Curated Topics page: BMRC Curated Topics List – a work-in-progress [RED styling]The BMRC’s Curated Topics List is a subject list with a focus designed to help remedy the pervasive invisibility of primary source material documenting Black history and culture. We’re inviting people who engage with collections on Black experiences to tell us what topics are most important in their work, that may resonate deeply with users. Each topic will include a note about its significance to Black studies, and all collections information in the BMRC Portal will eventually be tagged with one or more of these topics. The set of about 100 or so topics will comprise a special vocabulary that concisely encapsulates the subject domain as a dynamic body of knowledge--like having a subject matter expert at your elbow! Candidate Topics for the List – 2021 [red or subhead green styling]Black Studies [link to Charla’s topic] [Marcia’s topic – with link] Other topic-no link Other topic-no link Other topic-no link Help Curate the List! [subhead green styling]The project is in development now–if you are a scholar, educator, reference librarian, enthusiast, or researcher in Black Studies, get in touch! We need you to help create a robust and relevant resource for studying Black history and culture. Want to know more, or join in a working group? Email the Portal Archivist, Laurie Lee Moses at lmoses@uchicago.edu |
Marcia is planning to write up a topic (so it would link to a page exactly like the "Black Studies" page. |
Please see the new 12/8 document on Box for the Curated Topics text. Word doc that included home page content from a different issue is superseded by this document for the Curated Topics portion. |
Please confirm exactly what changes I still need to make for this issue. |
OK, coming right up!

Box doc with final copy |
This document seems to contain two different versions of the content for the "view all curated topics" page, and one paragraph to be included at the bottom of the featured curated topic. Tomorrow via Zoom, please tell me exactly what text should go on what page of the website. |
Ack! It was the first page only! I literally did not see that there was a second page. |
This is now implemented in fe67e31 and live on the server. |
new Curated Topic "Womanism" to be added. |
Content for additional topics, including "Womanism" by Marcia and 3 new topics from IIT's Mindy Pugh will be added post-integration into Wagtail. |
To demonstrate the issue, choose a facet from the Browse bar menu. From this page, viewing, for example, All Organizations https://bmrcportal-test.lib.uchicago.edu/browse/?b=organizations# , click on the link for the Featured Topic from the Sidebar, in this case "Black Nurses."
Nothing happens. There is now a dummy of the Featured Topic page so it should go to that page. This content should populate dynamically from the Topic of the week content that is stored (where?) and is tagged for a given week (?). [I'm not sure how this page is populated, or whether we in fact create 52 pages! To be displayed on their respective dates.]
