Pakon 0.7.0

Choose a tag to compare

@jorshhh jorshhh released this 26 Oct 00:39

Download Pakon.dmg for an Apple silicon Mac, or Pakon-Universal.dmg for an Intel Mac (it runs on both). Open it and drag Pakon to Applications. macOS 13 or later. Signed and notarized, so it opens like any other app.

What's new

  • Intel Macs. Pakon now runs on Intel Macs too: download Pakon-Universal.dmg.
  • B&W C41 film. A new film type for black-and-white film developed in colour chemistry, like Ilford XP2 and Kodak BW400CN. Pick B&W C41 on the Scan page. Dust removal works on it, the same as on colour negative. The other black-and-white option is now simply called B&W.
  • Sharpening on export. Next to Export in Frames, choose Sharpen: Off, Low, Medium or High. It works on every film type. The stronger settings also sharpen the film grain, so try Low first.
  • Steadier colour from the first scan. Before it calibrates, Pakon now waits for the scanner's light to settle at its working temperature, as Kodak's own software does. The Scan page shows "Warming up the lamp" while it waits, usually just a few seconds.
  • More natural colour balance on some rolls. The automatic colour balance now also uses the clear film at the start of the roll, as Kodak's software does. Most pictures look the same; a few come out less warm or less red. Kodak's settings for specific films are now used too, chosen from the code printed on the film's edge.

Unofficial, independent software. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Kodak or Pakon.

Windows and Linux

Pakon now runs on Windows and Linux too:

  • Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit): Pakon-Setup.exe. It sets up the scanner's USB driver itself (Windows asks for administrator permission once). It isn't signed yet: if SmartScreen warns, click More info, then Run anyway.
  • Linux (Ubuntu 24.04, Linux Mint 22): pakon_amd64.deb, installed with sudo apt install ./pakon_amd64.deb. No sudo needed to use the scanner.

These two were built later than the Mac downloads, from the current code, which also adds one window at a time. See the README for where each system keeps scans, settings and the log.

Download Pakon.dmg, open it, and drag Pakon to Applications. Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. Signed and notarized, so it opens like any other app.

What's new

  • Scans start in seconds. Getting the scanner ready for a roll used to take several minutes; now it takes about 13 seconds. Scan again within the hour and Pakon is ready for film almost right away. The light on the front of the scanner blinks orange while it gets ready and turns green when it's time to feed the film.
  • Choose the size of your scans. The Scan page has a new Resolution setting: Base 16 (2000 × 3000, as before), Base 8 (1500 × 2250) or Base 4 (1000 × 1500). Smaller sizes scan faster and make smaller files.
  • Remove dust and scratches. Tick Remove dust (ICE) next to Export in Frames, and Pakon cleans up dust, hairs and scratches on your pictures as it saves them. It works on colour negatives and slides. Exporting takes a little longer with it on.
  • Faster black-and-white scans. Black-and-white rolls now go through the scanner noticeably faster, and the files are smaller. Dust removal isn't available for black-and-white film.
  • Better framing, including half-frame and panoramic. Frames finds the pictures on a roll the way Kodak's own software does. Choose Full frame, Half frame or Panoramic, then press Auto-frame.
  • Stop button. While a scan runs, Stop ends it and keeps what was scanned.

Good to know

  • Frames no longer places the boxes by itself. A roll opens with the boxes you saved, or none: press Auto-frame, or place them by hand.
  • The new sizes and the faster black-and-white scans are for the F-135. On the F-135+, scans stay at Base 16 for now.

Download Pakon.dmg, open it, and drag Pakon to Applications. Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. Signed and notarized, so it opens like any other app.

Fixed

  • Pakon opens again on macOS 13 through 26. 0.5.0 quit right after launch on any Mac older than macOS 27. If you hit that, install this version over it.

Download Pakon.dmg, open it, and drag Pakon to Applications. Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. Signed and notarized, so it opens like any other app.

What's new

  • Slide film. Choose Slide (E-6) as the film type to scan unmounted slide strips. Pakon sets the scanner's light up for slides and renders them through Kodak's own slide colour path, with deep shadows that don't band. You can also switch a roll you already scanned to slide on the Process page.
  • Pakon knows your film. The scanner reads the code printed along the edge of the film. When Pakon recognises it, it shows the film next to the roll (for example "Kodak Gold 400 · ISO 400") and saves the film name and ISO into every JPEG and TIFF you export, so they show up in Photos and other apps as the caption, a keyword and the ISO. Films newer than about 2006 often aren't in Kodak's list, and then nothing is added.

Good to know

  • Film recognition works for rolls scanned with this version. Rolls you scanned before don't have the film code saved.

Scan film on your Kodak Pakon F-135 or F-135+ from your Mac. No old Windows PC needed.

Download Pakon.dmg, open it, and drag Pakon to Applications. Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. Signed and notarized, so it opens like any other app.

What's new

  • Black & white film. Choose B&W (silver) as the film type before you scan, and Pakon sets the scanner up for black & white negatives and gives you grey pictures. You can also switch a roll you already scanned to B&W on the Process page. Your choice is remembered for that roll.
  • A welcome page. Pakon now opens on a Home page with two choices: start a scan, or load a roll you scanned before. It also shows whether your scanner is ready. When you load a roll, you go straight to its progress.
  • Update alerts. From now on, Pakon tells you when a new version is out, with a button that takes you to the download. You're on the latest version, so you won't see it yet.
  • Help improve Pakon, if you want to. The first time you open this version, Pakon asks whether it may send anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. Nothing is sent unless you say yes, and never your photos, file names or scanner serial number. You can change your mind any time on the new Settings page, which also shows which version you have.

Good to know

  • Colour negative is still the default film type. B&W C-41 film (like Ilford XP2 or Kodak BW400CN) and slide film don't have their own setting yet. For B&W C-41, scan as colour negative, then switch the roll to B&W on the Process page.
  • To update later, download the new version, quit Pakon, and drag the new one into Applications to replace the old one. Your scans, settings and scanner data stay where they are.
  • If something goes wrong, the log is at ~/Library/Logs/Pakon/pakon.log.

What's new

  • One page per step. A bar along the bottom switches between Scan, Process, Frames and Export, so each step shows only what it needs. A scan goes straight to Frames when it finishes.
  • Every scan is an order. Scans go into a work folder (~/pakon unless you pick another), each in its own numbered folder, like a lab ticket: 000042/2026-10-11-14-30-scan.raw.
  • Exports are saved next to the scan. JPEGs, TIFFs and raw negatives go into jpeg/, tiff/ and raw/ in the order folder, with a progress bar and a Show in Finder button. No more waiting on zips.
  • Frame positions are remembered. Open a roll again and your boxes come back where you left them.
  • A bigger frame picker, with full (3000 px), half and new panoramic boxes. Clicking the strip starts the box where you click.
  • Open a roll and it processes right away. Raws are opened from your Mac, never copied.
  • Temporary files clean themselves up, including the ~1 GB a decoded roll takes.

Good to know

  • The first time the app sees your scanner, it saves a copy of the scanner's calibration data (EEPROM) in ~/Library/Application Support/Pakon/eeprom. That data exists nowhere else, so keep a copy off the machine.
  • If something goes wrong, the log is at ~/Library/Logs/Pakon/pakon.log.

What's new

  • A Mac app. Pakon opens in its own window, with everything it needs built in: no Terminal, Homebrew or Python to install.
  • Better colour when exporting a few frames. The Kodak scene balance now weighs each frame against the whole roll, so exporting a handful of similar frames (say, three autumn shots) no longer turns them red.
  • The scanner's firmware is included, so the app can start a cold scanner on its own.
