  • PR for the Gale Arabic word-based setup recipe to update the TDNN recipe
removing "_comb" from the run_ivector_common.sh script and the chain training script (run_tdnn_1b.sh)
  • using PCA instead of LDA for the ivector
  • adding run_chain_common.sh routine
  • minor cleanup (having script name and script tasks similar to other setups)
  • (waiting for completion of tdnn recipe for updating results)

The current NN was trained on top of tri2b (LDA-MLLT), and SAT was removed. Did you verify adding SAT doesn't improve NN results?

the setup is mapping every utterance to a new speaker. The WER of SAT was higher than WER of LDA-MLLT. I did not run NN from SAT but originally also the setup was using LDA-MLLT for NN training instead of SAT.

Thanks Ashish. Did you verified SAT is worse than LDA-MLLT? In RESULTS it seems not to be the case (tri3b better than tri2b). Maybe data has changed in your case. Also in the one-utt-per-spk case steps/train_sat_basis.sh may be better than steps/train_sat.sh according to @danpovey and my experience. I know the old setup was using LDA-MLLT but I suspect it's a bug, so you may want to try NN run on top of SAT/SAT-basis to ensure you have the best seed.

ok, thank you, I will surely try running an experiment with SAT/SAT-basis as a seed.

The old (out-dated) tdnn_1a recipe should be either deleted, or you can clearly state the difference between 1a and 1b recipes, and add comparison of the results in the 1d recipe. Also it'll be great if you can add a new version of the old tdnn_lstm recipe (producing 17.64 WER which is competitive), to see whether you get some improvements (I suspect not much though). Finally you may want to update s5b/RESULTS to reflect the best tdnn/tdnn-lstm numbers.

just curious, have you verified using the smaller tree is better than a larger one? If so, how much better?

Sorry, previously all the experiments that were done and the results shared in the emails (best WER 16.72) were with the number of leaves=3500. The result that I obtained this week with the number of leaves = 7000 is WER 18.07 (ideally i should have used 3500 but somehow i mistakingly used 7000). I was not able to figure out the cause and was running the setup again with fewer modifications. Dan found the bug by comparing old and new runs. I will do the tuning experiments to find best number of leaves. I am training the tdnn setup again to check if there are no other bugs.

Thanks, yeah it should be 16.72. I am checking for other bugs and waiting for the tdnn model to complete to update the results.

can you check what's the effect of tree size again? fix everything else and just change the tree size from 3500 to 7000. I suppose your previous finding was due to some other changes.

A code with fewer modifications completed. It gave a WER 16.56. The degradation in WER is due to using a different language model.
If we use kaldi_lm: WER 16.56 [ 11538 / 69668, 1449 ins, 2236 del, 7853 sub ]
if we use srilm: WER 17.98 [ 12528 / 69668, 1422 ins, 2661 del, 8445 sub ]

Should I revert back the language model changes or should I try a different configuration of the srilm.

This doesn't look right to me -- although I see it was a pre-existing condition in this recipe. <UNK> should normally have its own phone. Of course, the word <UNK> would be filtered out in scoring.

This doesn't seem the same as the kaldi_lm setup w.r.t. the treatment of vocabulary. The LM estimation differences should be quite small; it may be to do with the treatment of the vocabulary and of <UNK>. In the wsj setup look at wsj_train_lms.sh. See these options:

-limit-vocab -vocab $sdir/wordlist.final.s -unk \
 -map-unk "<UNK>"

I don't know if some subset of these might work as well, but anyway, I assume that would do something similar to what kaldi_lm is doing. Check, after you build the LMs that the prob of unk is similar vs. kaldi_lm, and that unk appears in a similar number of n-gram contexts. And check how frequently unk is decoded in the two setups.
I'm assuming this is a phonetic system and that you are still using the QCRI lexicon.

The use of split() in latin-1 encoding (which might be used for other ASCII-compatible encoded data like utf-8) is not right because character 160 (expressed here in decimal) is a NBSP in latin-8 encoding and is also in the range UTF-8 uses for encoding. The same goes for strip(). Thanks @ChunChiehChang for finding the issue.

TBD: a binary for x-vector computation. This PR also contains unrelated decoder speedups (skipping range checks for transition ids... this may cause segfaults when graphs are mismatched).
