What's new in v4 ‐ Migrating from v3

Playlist > Play Queue

What you previously knew as the "Playlist" is now the "Play Queue". The Playlist from v3 showed tracks grouped by artist, album, and genre, whereas the new Play Queue in v4 is only a linear (non-grouped) list of tracks, which is more intuitive because it represents a simple (linear) sequence of tracks that are scheduled to be played. Having groups in a Play Queue does not make much sense.

Notes:

  • Groupings of tracks can be found in the new v4 Library (see the next section for a detailed description).
  • v4 introduces Managed Playlists (see section below for a detailed description).

2 new app modes

v4 brings 2 new app presentation modes, for even more ways to lay out and interact with the app:

  • Unified mode: A single resizable window that encapsulates all the core modules of the app. Think of how the native Music app window behaves.
  • Compact mode: A single compact fixed-size window that lets you do the essentials, with track cover art prominently displayed. Think of how the native Music app's "Miniplayer" looks and feels.

Library & Tune Browser

v4 introduces a new and full-fledged music library module that provides a nicely organized and searchable view of your entire music collection. Tracks are grouped by artist, album, genre, and decade (NEW!), and your playlist files (eg. M3U) are also displayed as groups of tracks. Future app versions may allow custom groupings by a metadata field of your choice (eg. composer).

In addition to the groupings, there is a new file system browser called the Tune Browser that shows your music collection as a file system tree, but including all the relevant track metadata.

The Library is where you will also view and manage your custom playlists (see "Managed Playlists" below), Favorites, History, and Bookmarks.

Easily play tracks, groups, or folders from the Library with a single click or from convenient context menus.

Managed (Custom) Playlists

A Managed or Custom Playlist is a sequence of tracks that you can easily create from any arbitrary selection of tracks from anywhere in the app - Play Queue, Library, Tune Browser (from folders or a selection of files), or even from Favorites, History, and Bookmarks.

You can conveniently create and manage as many playlists as you want, and play them with a single click from the Library, where they are displayed.

As with the new Play Queue, tracks in Playlists are not grouped. They are structured and displayed as a linear sequence.

Theming - Fonts and Colors

v4 has the same theming options as v3 did, but customization of the font/color schemes has been greatly simplified. Wherever it made sense, redundant settings have been consolidated, in places where settings can be more broadly applied (eg - sliders and other controls signifying activity now all reuse the same color setting). The color schemes in v3 had 37 settings, while there are now only 12 settings in v4.
