en | Using KeeFox

Chris Tomlinson edited this page Oct 17, 2015 · 7 revisions

The best way to learn how to use KeeFox is to follow the introductory tutorial for new users which can be found here: http://tutorial.keefox.org/part1

Once you've completed the basic and advanced tutorials you should have a good idea how you can use KeeFox to help you manage your passwords but some other useful topics are explained in this section.

There is a lot of information in the tutorial that is not duplicated in this manual.

As with the rest of this Manual, you are encouraged to modify this page in order to correct any mistakes you find or add new topics.

Searching and using the 'Logins' menu to login

The Logins menu contains all KeePass entries that have a URL. You can also search the same group of entries by typing in the search box that appears when you open the KeeFox panel (by clicking the main KeeFox button or using the Ctrl-Shift-1 keyboard shortcut).

You can quickly log in to the website associated with any entry listed in the search results or "Logins" browse menu; when you press the left button of your mouse on an entry KeeFox will open the website into the current tab and automatically fill and submit the login details stored within the entry.

If you instead press the middle button of your mouse on an entry (or hold down the Ctrl button on the keyboard while left-clicking) KeeFox will open the URL associated with that entry into a new tab and automatically fill and submit the login details stored within the entry.

There is a Firefox bug which may break the current tab feature described above. If you find it is unreliable in your version of Firefox, wait for Mozilla to fix the Firefox bug and in the mean-time you can open the login in a new tab by middle-clicking or holding down the Ctrl key while left-clicking.

More detail and an updated status for the bug can be found here: https://github.com/luckyrat/KeeFox/issues/419

Generating passwords

The KeePass password generator (Tools / Password generator) is a powerful way to easily create secure passwords for any requirements. KeeFox provides a short cut to generate a new password straight from Firefox so that you can easily copy a new password into your clipboard whenever signing up for a new website or service.

KeeFox will always ask KeePass to use the most recently used password generation "profile"; i.e. the same settings will be used for things like the number of characters in the password and the types of character that can be used.

It can be tempting to paste the new password somewhere temporarily while signing up to a new service but for better security you should try to avoid doing that. If you do paste it somewhere, beware of putting it into convenient spaces such as the Firefox search bar because this will result in the password being sent unencrypted over the internet as part of a search autocomplete request.

Home group

The Start group (and associated subgroups) contains the password entries available to KeeFox.

Changing the Start Group

The Start group can be changed by right-clicking a group in the left column of KeePass and selecting "Set as KeeFox start group"

Alternatively, you can change the group by editing the group settings (e.g. by right-clicking on a group in the KeeFox Logins menu in Firefox and selecting "edit group". The "edit group" dialog box allows you to:

  • View the visibility of the group according to KeeFox
  • Set the group to be the KeeFox start group
  • Configure different start groups depending upon your current location (as defined by the "Use this location" setting in the "KeePass" tab in KeeFox options). This can be useful to access different passwords at work and home, although you could also consider using multiple databases.

Regrettably, the terminology is inconsistent but the START group is identical to the HOME group.

Multiple databases

You can open more than one database at the same time in KeePass. Each database opens in a separate tab. This can be useful in situations where you want or need to keep some passwords separate (e.g. personal and business).

When you have more than one database open, KeeFox will search for passwords and list login entries from all databases (unless you have changed the relevant "Finding entries" options).

You can control which database KeeFox saves new passwords to when the "Save password" panel is displayed.

You can tell KeeFox which database you want to open first when launching KeePass - just look in the Options/Advanced panel.

Configuring matching URLs

As well as the standard URL in your KeePass entry, you can attach any number of additional URLs to each KeePass entry. This is the "alternative URL" technique that is mentioned in the getting started tutorial but it's possible to get very fine control over the URLs that an entry matches so we've explained the main concepts and included examples on the alternative URLs page.

WARNING!

OLD INFORMATION

The information in this Wiki is out of date.

It is only of interest if you are using the old add-on called KeeFox in a very old (insecure) version of Firefox or other browsers based on the old Firefox XUL technology.

Read the manual for Kee and KeeBird instead.
