The v2 rebuild of MoodReel: a personal, mood-first movie picker for one person on iPhone and Mac. Three taps, a short deck, a head-to-head between your favourites, and one pick for tonight.

Highlights

Sign-in

  • Passkey only (Face ID / Touch ID), synced across iPhone and Mac through iCloud Keychain. No passwords, no sign-up page.
  • Single owner: the account is created once at /setup with a private setup token. A second account can never be created.
  • Add or remove passkeys in Settings.

The movie flow

  • Three taps: mood (Gripping, Dark, Mind-bending, Funny, Feel-good, Moving, Romantic), energy and time.
  • A 15-film deck, about two-thirds English. Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi films appear only when they're crime, thriller or mystery, or acclaimed.
  • Swipe or tap: right to save, left to skip, up for seen it, down for not for me. Arrow keys on the Mac.
  • Undo steps back through the whole deck (button, or Z on the Mac).
  • Head-to-head: up to four saves face off, "this or that", until one is left.
  • Tonight's pick: a one-line reason, the trailer, and "Where to watch" (a Google search for the title).

How picks are chosen

  • Rated by weighted score, not popularity, and very new releases are held back until they have enough votes.
  • Films nearly everyone has already seen are marked down.
  • Your swipes teach it your taste over time. "Not for me" counts strongly; ratings never change it.
  • Anything you've seen, saved, picked or rejected never comes back. Skips return after 60 days.
  • Films on your streaming services come first, with an "On Netflix"-style badge.
  • An AI pass can re-rank the strongest candidates. It is optional, and the rules always decide what's eligible.

Saved and History

  • Saved: everything you swiped right on, with Where to watch, trailer, Seen it and Remove.
  • Pick from my saved: choose a mood and time, and the four best-fitting saved films go straight to the head-to-head.
  • History: every pick with its date, mood and reason, plus a 1–5 star rating.
  • Did you watch it?: a few hours after a pick, the start screen asks: yes (with optional stars), not yet (back to Saved), or skipped it.

Settings

  • Look: Bold & playful in light mode, Cinematic dark in dark mode, following the device, with a per-device override.
  • Streaming services: pick from every subscription service TMDb lists for India.

Install

  • Add to the iPhone home screen from Safari (Share → Add to Home Screen) to open it full screen like an app.

Under the hood

  • Next.js 16 on Vercel; functions run in Singapore, next to the Neon Postgres database.
  • Movie data from TMDb; streaming availability from JustWatch via TMDb.
  • Tests: 52 unit, 7 database, and 22 browser tests that run the whole flow at laptop and iPhone sizes against a fake TMDb. They run on every change.

Not in this release

  • Series (Phase 3) and books (Phase 4).
  • AI curation is wired in but off: Vercel's AI Gateway needs a card on file to unlock its free credits. Until then the rules alone make every deck.
