Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 31 Oct 18:05

VideoSTAX 1.0.1

The macOS app is now signed and notarized by Apple. VideoSTAX for Mac is signed with an Apple Developer ID certificate and checked by Apple's notary service, so it opens with a double click: no more System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. If you have 0.9.4 or later, VideoSTAX offers this update by itself (or use Settings → Updates → Check now).

What changes

  • macOS: signed with Developer ID and the hardened runtime, notarized and stapled. The bundled tools (FFmpeg, mkvmerge, VapourSynth and Python) are signed too.
  • Windows and Linux: same features as 1.0.0, rebuilt as 1.0.1 so every system has the same version.

Cosa cambia

VideoSTAX 1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 25 Oct 10:14

VideoSTAX 1.0 is here: one video transcoding studio for every desktop. Besides macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows x64 and Linux x86_64, VideoSTAX now runs natively on Windows on ARM and Linux ARM64. If you have 0.9.4 or later, VideoSTAX offers this update by itself (or use Settings → Updates → Check now).

Oltre a macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows x64 e Linux x86_64, VideoSTAX gira ora in modo nativo su Windows ARM e Linux ARM64.

New

  • Windows on ARM64 (Snapdragon PCs, Windows 11 ARM virtual machines): interface, engine and FFmpeg are native ARM64; mkvmerge and VapourSynth run through the built-in x64 emulation. The x64-only Rigaya tools (QSVEncC, NVEncC, VCEEncC) are not included on ARM.
  • Linux ARM64: AppImage, .deb (Debian/Ubuntu) and .rpm (Fedora/openSUSE), for Raspberry Pi 5-class boards, ARM servers and ARM virtual machines.
  • Hardware encoding on ARM: on Windows, VideoSTAX uses the GPU encoder through Media Foundation (the Qualcomm Adreno encoder on Snapdragon PCs; also Intel, AMD and NVIDIA on x64 PCs). On Linux ARM it uses the V4L2 encoders of the system-on-chip (for example Raspberry Pi 4 and many Allwinner, Amlogic and NXP boards), besides VAAPI. These encoders appear in the menu only when they actually work on your computer. No proprietary SDK is involved: the licences stay those of FFmpeg.
  • VapourSynth filters on Linux: the Linux packages now include the video source plugin (ffms2) VapourSynth needs, so deinterlacing and noise-reduction scripts work.
  • Updates for your architecture: the in-app update downloads the x64 or ARM64 package that matches your computer.

  • Linux ARM64: AppImage, .deb e .rpm.
  • Encoder hardware su ARM: Media Foundation su Windows (GPU Adreno sui PC Snapdragon, anche Intel/AMD/NVIDIA su x64) e V4L2 sui SoC Linux ARM.

VideoSTAX 0.9.6

Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 24 Oct 12:16

VideoSTAX 0.9.6 follows the renaming of the GitHub repositories: the downloads now live at github.com/kikoz85/videoSTAX (formerly videostax-releases, which still redirects here). It includes everything from 0.9.5. If you have 0.9.4 or 0.9.5, VideoSTAX offers this version by itself (or use Settings → Updates → Check now).

Changes

  • The in-app update check now asks kikoz85/videoSTAX directly instead of going through GitHub's redirect from the old name.
  • Links in the app documentation point to the new repository. No other functional change.

Nessun'altra modifica funzionale.

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 09 Oct 18:29

VideoSTAX 0.9.4 can tell you when a new version is out and download it for you. It includes everything from 0.9.3.

New

  • Update check: at startup (at most once a day, never during an encode) VideoSTAX asks GitHub for the latest release. If it is newer, a window shows what's new.
  • Download for your system: one click downloads the right file to your Downloads folder, with progress and a size check:
    • macOS: the DMG opens; drag VideoSTAX to Applications.
    • Windows: Explorer shows the ZIP; extract it over your VideoSTAX folder.
    • Linux AppImage: the AppImage is replaced; click Restart now.
    • Linux .deb / .rpm: the package opens in the system installer.
  • Settings → Updates: turn the automatic check off, see the last check, or Check now. In the window you can also skip a version.
  • Only the latest version number and notes are read from GitHub; nothing is sent about you or your files.

VideoSTAX 0.9.3

Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 08 Oct 22:11

VideoSTAX 0.9.3 fixes the progress, remaining time and size estimate of the native macOS VideoToolbox engine, and makes its Apple AAC audio encode much faster. It includes everything from 0.9.2.

macOS — native VideoToolbox engine

  • Apple AAC audio up to 8× faster. 13 minutes of 5.1 audio now take 16 s instead of 133 s (about 50× real time); the resulting file is byte-identical.
  • Remaining time includes the audio. After the video, the audio encode used to show as "Mux" at 100% with 1 s left. Now progress and remaining time cover video, audio and mux, in the panel, on the Dock icon and in the bottom bar. During the audio stage the panel shows "Audio" and its speed.
  • Correct size estimate. The estimate uses the real bitrates of the audio and subtitle tracks instead of 10% of the source size (it could show 1.55 GB for a 682 MB file).

macOS — motore nativo VideoToolbox

  • macOS: VideoSTAX-v0.9.3-macOS.dmg (Apple Silicon / arm64)
  • Windows: VideoSTAX-v0.9.3-Windows-x64.zip

VideoSTAX 0.9.2

Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 08 Oct 20:25

VideoSTAX 0.9.2 refreshes the interface and shows the remaining time on the app icon while encoding. Encoding itself is unchanged: same engines, same speed. It includes every fix from 0.9.1 and 0.9.0.

New

  • Remaining time on the icon: the macOS Dock badge shows the time left, with a progress bar across the icon (like HandBrake). On Windows the taskbar button shows the progress.
  • Frame preview: a thumbnail of the source; click it to compare original and output (crop and resize) with a draggable divider.
  • Destination summary lists only what changes from the source and estimates the file size in bitrate modes. An HDR source encoded at 8 bit is now labelled PQ/HLG with a warning (banding, no HDR metadata) instead of "HDR10".
  • Equal-height columns, with the main encoder settings (rate control, quality, preset, tune, bit depth) in the Codec card and Advanced encoder options pinned at its bottom. The options dialog has search, changed markers, per-field reset and a copyable command line.
  • Numbered filter pipeline with the engine that runs it (VapourSynth or ffmpeg); recent files on the start screen; job progress in the bottom bar; shortcuts Cmd/Ctrl+O, Cmd/Ctrl+Enter, Cmd/Ctrl+, and F6. Light theme fixed; all texts translated in 5 languages.

macOS

  • App 261 → 220 MB: the LGPL FFmpeg libraries of the native path are no longer copied three times, and they now target macOS 12.
  • Known limit: the bundled ffmpeg/ffprobe come from Homebrew and need the macOS version of the build Mac (currently macOS 27).

Downloads (videoSTAX tag v0.9.2)

  • macOS: VideoSTAX-v0.9.2-macOS.dmg (Apple Silicon / arm64)
  • Windows: VideoSTAX-v0.9.2-Windows-x64.zip

VideoSTAX v0.9.1

Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 08 Oct 17:53

VideoSTAX 0.9.1 makes the Windows download much lighter and adds native Linux packages. It includes all the fixes from 0.9.0 (NVEncC on Windows/Linux, Windows process handling, VapourSynth bundles, macOS Apple AAC channel order): see 0.9.0.

Windows

  • Zip 875 MB → 296 MB, extracted 1.9 GB → 705 MB.
    • No second copy of NVEncC64.exe (206 MB).
    • Rigaya files for AI/super-resolution filters that VideoSTAX never uses are no longer shipped (NVIDIA VFX/NGX, OpenVINO, ONNX Runtime; none is loaded by the encoders).
    • The byte-identical FFmpeg DLLs of the three encoders are shared in bin\rigaya\.
    • Debug symbols and the duplicate VapourSynth/pip files are gone.
    • ffmpeg comes from the leaner BtbN gpl-shared build (same encoders and filters VideoSTAX uses).
  • Zip 875 MB → 296 MB (ffmpeg BtbN): niente doppioni dell'exe NVEncC, niente componenti AI opzionali, DLL condivise tra gli encoder, niente simboli di debug.

Linux

  • New .deb (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint) and .rpm (Fedora, openSUSE, RHEL) packages:
    • installed in /opt/videostax;
    • started from the application menu or with videostax.
  • Nuovi pacchetti .deb e .rpm; l'AppImage resta disponibile per qualsiasi distribuzione.
  • Smaller bundle: stripped Rigaya encoders, no static Python archives or duplicate VapourSynth/libpython copies.

All platforms

  • The processing panel translates the end-of-queue actions. The standby/shutdown help text covers Windows and Linux.

VideoSTAX v0.9.0

Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 08 Oct 13:32

VideoSTAX 0.9.0 is a reliability release built from a review of the whole codebase. It fixes the NVEncC problems on Windows (and Linux), makes the three Rigaya hardware encoders behave like the ffmpeg encoders (audio, subtitles, VapourSynth), fixes several Windows-only bugs and corrects the channel order of multichannel Apple AAC on macOS.

Hardware encoders (NVEncC, QSVEncC, VCEEncC) — Windows & Linux

  • Valid command lines. NVEncC rejected every default job (Unknown option: --icq, Invalid value "balanced" for "--preset"). Each tool now has its own presets, rate-control modes, tunes, profiles and levels. All 261 UI combinations were checked against NVEncC 9.38, QSVEncC 8.33 and VCEEncC 9.21. NVEncC constant quality is --qvbr <q>; presets are P1–P7.
  • Audio and subtitles are kept. The encoder writes the video track only. Audio (copy or re-encode, gain, loudnorm, channels), subtitles, languages, A/V delays and chapters are muxed afterwards with mkvmerge/ffmpeg. Before, any track that was not a plain copy was silently dropped.
  • VapourSynth works with hardware encoders: vspipe -c y4m | nvencc --y4m -i -. Crop/resize without a script use --crop / --output-res; HDR colour data and mastering metadata are copied from the source.
  • Readable errors and progress: the real cause is shown (e.g. CUDA not available.), and progress is reported for piped input too.
  • Linux: QSVEncC uses --avsw, because the VA-API backend rejects --avhw.

Windows

  • Each Rigaya encoder ships in its own folder (bin\nvencc\, …) with its own DLLs. NVEncC 9.x and the shared ffmpeg 9.x both use avcodec-63.dll, and before they overwrote each other.
  • Child processes keep the system PATH (Windows reports it as Path).
  • Pause/resume works (it was a no-op). Cancel leaves no orphan processes, and a Job Object stops the encoders if the engine exits. No console windows, and no blocking "missing DLL" dialogs.
  • ffmpeg progress during the audio stage. x265 two-pass works again (the drive letter broke stats=). Bundled VapourSynth is detected.
  • Settings, queue and event commands live in %APPDATA%\VideoSTAX (and ~/.config/VideoSTAX on Linux). Existing files are migrated.
  • End-of-queue standby/hibernate/shutdown and "open website" work on Windows and Linux.

All platforms

  • MP4/MOV: text subtitles are converted to mov_text (the job used to fail with "Could not write header").
  • vspipe → encoder pipelines can no longer hang when the encoder dies.
  • auto tune/profile are no longer passed to x264/x265.
  • Accented paths are safe in the UI ↔ engine channel. The engine is shut down gracefully.

macOS

  • VideoToolbox (Go/ffmpeg): Speed/Quality uses -prio_speed (-preset was ignored).
  • Native VT Apple AAC: in 5.1 the left channel was encoded as centre. Channels are now mapped by speaker label, and 6.1/7.1 encode (verified channel by channel).
  • Native VT: probe output is captured (track selection and A/V offsets now apply). Audio is capped at 48 kHz. Multi-track and AC-3/E-AC-3/Opus/FLAC jobs use the ffmpeg fallback.

Native VT remains experimental and disabled by default (Settings → Performance).

VideoSTAX v0.8.1

Choose a tag to compare

@kikoz85 kikoz85 released this 04 Oct 13:54

VideoSTAX 0.8.1 extends the experimental macOS Native VideoToolbox path with a full native audio pipeline: LGPL decode and filters, Apple AAC-LC encoding, and LGPL transcode for AC3 / E-AC3 / FLAC / OPUS. MP3 jobs stay on the Go / ffmpeg CLI path.

Windows and Linux builds from main share the same 0.8.1 version in pubspec.yaml; publish platform binaries to kikoz85/videoSTAX under tag v0.8.1 when ready (see docs/RELEASE-REMOTE-BUILD.md).

macOS Highlights

  • Launch fix (re-uploaded DMG): bundles libswscale required by libavfilter (Library not loaded: @rpath/libswscale.8.dylib on the first 0.8.1 build). Replace /Applications/VideoSTAX.app from the current VideoSTAX-v0.8.1-macOS.dmg on the release page.
  • Apple AAC: PCM from LGPL decode → AVAudioConverter (AudioToolbox) with explicit 5.1 / 7.1 channel layouts, muxed into a temp .mka for remux with native video.
  • Filters: gain and loudnorm via bundled libavfilter (requires BUILD_FFMPEG_LGPL=1 dylibs in the app, including libswscale).
  • HEVC MKV: Native path from 0.8.0 (rewrap, mkvmerge audio copy + sync) remains; 0.8.1 adds native audio routing above.
  • Other codecs: AC3, E-AC3, FLAC, OPUS encoded via LGPL dylibs; stream copy when appropriate.
  • Fallback: If native audio fails, the job continues with bundled ffmpeg CLI for the audio temp.
  • Routing: MP3 encode jobs are excluded from native VT eligibility.
  • Audio diagnostics: log shows audio plan at job start; after video, Apple AAC: … AVAudioConverter or explicit Apple AAC failed: before ffmpeg fallback. Original channel count keeps source layout (5.1).

Windows & Linux (0.8.1 codebase)

  • Same UI version and shared settings schema as 0.8.0; no Native VT (macOS-only).
  • Windows (re-upload): VideoSTAX-v0.8.1-Windows-x64.zip — lighter bundle (~641 MB) and NVEncC CLI fixes: --cqp (not --icq), valid --preset mapping (e.g. Balanced → default), tune/rate modes aligned with Rigaya. Re-download if you hit preset or ICQ errors.

Native VT remains experimental and disabled by default (Settings → Performance).
