Both numbers are worth having, and the per folder one is closer than it looks. On most IMAP servers Tachyon already fetches the message count for every folder when you log in. It is just only shown in one place: Settings, Folders, click a folder, and the properties box lists unread over total. The folder tree in the sidebar carries only the unread count, which is probably why the total feels absent. The current folder's total is already in the client as well. It drives the page arithmetic for the pager and is never printed anywhere. Putting it in the message list footer, beside the quota indicator that already sits down there, is a small change. The mailbox wide figure is the one that needs a decision rather than code. Summing the folders is trivial. Agreeing on what belongs in the sum is not. Trash and Spam often hold more than the inbox, so one combined number with those included will look wrong to most people, and leaving them out will look wrong to the rest. Unsubscribed folders are a third question. So: what would you expect the number to mean? Tell me which folders you would want counted for your own mailbox and I will take that as the default. One caveat worth stating now rather than later. Those free counts depend on the IMAP LIST-STATUS extension, which Dovecot and Cyrus both support. On an older server Tachyon has to ask each folder one at a time, so on those installs a mailbox wide total would have to be something you ask for rather than something displayed continuously. |

Sometimes it’s necessary to know the total number of emails in a folder, as well as the total number of emails in the entire mailbox.
In your opinion, should this information be displayed somewhere?
