The first release of Kite: a single program that gives a Markdown blog a studio in the browser, and publishes it as a static site or runs it on a server.

Highlights

  • Start in the browser. Run kite run in an empty folder. The browser opens on a page that asks what the site is called, and then you are in the studio.
  • A studio for writing. A visual editor that reads and writes Markdown, with the source a click away; image uploads, categories and tags, drafts, scheduled posts, pages, and a preview drawn by the site's own theme.
  • Your files stay yours. Content is plain Markdown on disk. Saving rewrites only what changed and keeps key order and comments, so editing a title is a one-line diff. Front matter is YAML or TOML, as Hugo writes it, and kite doctor --fix-ids brings the posts of a Hugo site in.
  • Publish your way. Export the site as a zip for any static host; deploy it to GitHub Pages with the workflow Kite writes, which also publishes scheduled posts when they fall due; commit and push with the built-in Git publisher; or run the site on a server with Docker.
  • Themes. A default theme with light and dark modes and settings in the studio. Install another from a zip, try it on the whole site before switching, and give pages templates of their own.
  • Plugins. A plugin adds code to pages, or runs WebAssembly in a sandbox while the site is built. The official ones: Analytics, Comments, Math and Diagrams and Search.
  • One account. Sign in with a password on a server, or use the studio without one on your own computer.

Install

Download the archive for your system below, unpack it, put kite somewhere on your PATH, and run kite run in an empty folder. On macOS, xattr -d com.apple.quarantine kite lets a downloaded program run the first time.

To run a site on a server with Docker:

docker run -d --name kite --restart unless-stopped -p 127.0.0.1:1717:1717 -v kite-data:/data ghcr.io/kite-plus/kite:0.1.0

Every archive can be checked against checksums.txt, and a given commit builds to the same binary on any machine.

Notes

Kite is in early development, and things may still change from one version to the next. The reference covers the studio, themes, plugins, configuration and deployment.
