Linux preview 3 brings the Linux branch up to date with Scrawl 0.3.13 (preview 2 was based on 0.3.10), and keeps the CPU fix for #82. It is an early Linux build for Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, not part of the stable release. The AppImages and --version now say 0.3.13.

Download and run

Choose x86_64 for Intel/AMD or aarch64 for ARM64. For Intel/AMD:

chmod +x Scrawl-0.3.13-linux-x86_64.AppImage
./Scrawl-0.3.13-linux-x86_64.AppImage --appimage-extract-and-run app

Verify the download with sha256sum --check --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS. For desktop setup (the input group on Wayland, portals) and per-desktop limits, see the first preview's instructions.

New for Linux since preview 2

  • Holding the record shortcut now does the same as tapping it: the display under the pointer starts recording when you let go. The capsule shows Area, Window and Screen chips for a few seconds so you can switch. Choose What to Record… in the tray menu opens the full picker. The recording pill shows only Cancel and Finish; Ctrl+Z undoes the last stroke.
  • Settings › General shows each shortcut in a field with just its own keys. Click it, type a new shortcut, Esc cancels. The paste shortcut can be turned off, with Backspace or Delete.
  • Keyframes show just their number in a small white chip.
  • Arrows and circles you draw are recognized, including one-stroke arrows and flat or tailed circles.
  • Clicks on Scrawl's own windows are no longer recorded in your captures.
  • You can plug in any local speech model with the command transcriber ("transcriber": "command"). Hex's data folder fix and the ingest connection limits come along too.
  • Smart routing (experiment) can pick the OpenCode session for a capture of a local page or artifact. Captures of a lost build are rebuilt with scrawl recover <bundle>. Retention runs hourly.
  • A pasted capture tells the agent to look at the frames. The compromised eMudhra root certificates are no longer trusted.

Known limits

  • Ubuntu 24.04 or newer only. Plasma 6 and GNOME 48+ portal shortcuts are untested on a real desktop.
  • On Wayland, input monitoring needs membership in the input group and a new login. The Window picker lists X11/XWayland windows only; use Screen or Area for native Wayland apps.
  • There is no cabled iPhone capture, video export, Sparkle updates, or audio ducking on Linux. The Windows-only clipboardImage experiment is not available.
  • The reporter's Ryzen 8700G confirmation of #82 is still pending.

Verification

The tag points to 76a9d73e546cc124cbf1bfb58efaeca0f384bdf5 on feat/linux (PR #24, still a draft). These are the exact tested CI artifacts. This prerelease does not update the stable site or the Sparkle feed.
