Here you say that ConfigMap values can be referenced like {{ <name>.<data>.<key> }} but in your one and only example here, it's referenced like "{{ \"roles-dictionary\".data.\"allowed-roles\" }}" and so this is confusing.

Agreed! The double quotes are to escape the "-" which JMESPATH does not allow. Will update.
