@leonardonels leonardonels released this 27 Oct 06:34

Third beta of Prismark. It adds a stress test that checks stability, a Vector maths benchmark (AVX-512 / AVX2 / NEON), and reworks the app's tabs.

Every download is portable: unpack and run, nothing to install.

Windows x86-64 — prismark-0.3.0-windows-x86_64.zip

Unzip anywhere and start prismark-gui.exe. Needs 64-bit Windows 10 or later. To record power, accept the offer to restart as administrator.

Linux x86-64 — prismark-0.3.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz

Built on Ubuntu 22.04, it runs there and on any distribution of the same age or newer: Ubuntu 22.04 or later, Fedora 35 or later, Debian 12 or later (it needs glibc 2.34). It also runs from a live USB session. Checked on Fedora 44.

tar -xzf prismark-0.3.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
cd prismark-0.3.0-linux-x86_64
sudo chmod a+r /sys/class/powercap/intel-rapl:0/energy_uj # optional: power readings, until reboot
./prismark-gui

Linux ARM64 — prismark-0.3.0-linux-aarch64.tar.gz

For ARM64 boards and computers. It runs on Ubuntu 22.04 or later, including NVIDIA Jetson Orin boards on JetPack 6, on Fedora 36 or later, and on Debian 12 or later, including 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS (it needs glibc 2.35). JetPack 5 (Ubuntu 20.04) is too old. Checked on Fedora 44.

tar -xzf prismark-0.3.0-linux-aarch64.tar.gz
cd prismark-0.3.0-linux-aarch64
./prismark-gui

On a Jetson, results depend heavily on the power mode (nvpmodel, jetson_clocks): note which one you ran in.

What changed since 0.2.1

  • Stress test (Advanced, in its own section). Runs one core, all cores, each core in turn, or memory under full load for 10 min, 30 min or until you stop it. It shows how speed, clock, temperature and power hold up over time, and scores minute 9–10, so any run of 10 minutes or more is ranked.
  • A stability verdict. Every result is checked against the one a correct machine computes, and a wrong one is pinned to the CPU that produced it. A run ends as stable, failed (when and on which CPU) or stopped hot. It stops at the first error by default, and optionally at a temperature limit. On the command line: --mode stress, --stress, --stress-time, --stress-on-error, --stress-max-temp. A failed run exits with status 4.
  • Each core in turn. One physical core at a time, 10 s each, round and round, to find the single core that is unstable at its own boost clock. Shows a bar per core. The score is the slowest core.
  • Memory test. Covers about three quarters of the free memory with four rotating patterns (address, its complement, walking ones, their complement), and reports its speed in GB/s.
  • Vector maths (K12), a new benchmark on one core and on all cores. It is a double-precision matrix multiply at the widest vectors the processor has, scored in GFLOP/s. Every width gives bit-identical results, and the ranking shows which instructions ran.
  • Tabs reworked. Memory & timing is now in Simple, and Responsiveness moved to Advanced. The New instructions (ISA uplift) tab was removed, together with the matrix maths test and the per-ISA kernel modules.
  • Quick runs are unranked. Full is the default. A Quick run is a fast check and is no longer ranked, and stress tests have no Quick variant.
  • Charts. The test pages show their charts as stacked strips (speed, clock, temperature, power), with room to read them.
  • Runs started with sudo save to your own results folder instead of root's.
  • New references: Ryzen 5 7500F, Ryzen 7 8845HS (Windows), Threadripper PRO 9985WX, Core i9-14900K (Linux), and a delidded i9-10900K engineering sample.

Beta: known limits

  • The references don't have Vector maths or stress scores yet, so those rankings list only your own runs for now.
  • The AVX-512 path of Vector maths has not yet been run on AVX-512 hardware.
  • The ARM64 package has been checked in containers, not yet on a Jetson or another board. Power readings are not available on ARM64 boards yet.
  • If the Linux window misbehaves under Wayland, start it with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb ./prismark-gui.
  • Results from 0.3.0 are not comparable with 0.2.x for the removed and new tests.

@leonardonels leonardonels released this 11 Oct 07:57

Second beta of Prismark. It fixes the power readings on Linux desktops with a Radeon graphics card, and building from source on Ubuntu 22.04.

Both downloads are portable: unpack and run, nothing to install.

Windows x86-64 — prismark-0.2.1-windows-x86_64.zip

Unzip anywhere and start prismark-gui.exe. Needs 64-bit Windows 10 or later. To record power, accept the offer to restart as administrator.

Linux x86-64 — prismark-0.2.1-linux-x86_64.tar.gz

Runs on Ubuntu 22.04 or later (or a distribution of the same age or newer), including a live USB session.

tar -xzf prismark-0.2.1-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
cd prismark-0.2.1-linux-x86_64
sudo chmod a+r /sys/class/powercap/intel-rapl:0/energy_uj # optional: power readings, until reboot
./prismark-gui

What changed since 0.2.0

  • Linux power on desktops with a Radeon card. Without root, 0.2.0 could record the graphics card's own power (a flat few watts) as the processor's. The Radeon power sensor is now used only on AMD processors with built-in graphics, where it is the processor's power.
  • Why power is missing. When the processor's energy counter can be read only by root, the summary now says power none rapl-needs-root instead of just none.
  • Building on Ubuntu 22.04. The README now lists what 22.04 needs: CMake 3.25 or later (from Kitware's repository; 22.04 ships 3.22) and libqt6svg6-dev.

Beta: known limits

  • The Linux desktop app was tested under X11 and Wayland (GNOME). If the window misbehaves under Wayland, start it with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb ./prismark-gui.
  • On Linux, the "Started from rest" tests depend heavily on the energy setting: with the default balance_performance, short tasks can run several times slower than with performance. Prismark measures the computer as it is set up and changes nothing.
  • A full run takes about 30–40 minutes. Don't touch the keyboard or mouse during the tests marked as needing an idle computer.
  • Results from 0.2.x may not be comparable with later versions.

@leonardonels leonardonels released this 11 Oct 00:01

First public beta of Prismark, a CPU benchmark that measures your computer as it is configured, test by test, with no overall score.

Both downloads are portable: unpack and run, nothing to install.

Windows x86-64 — prismark-0.2.0-windows-x86_64.zip

Unzip anywhere and start prismark-gui.exe. Needs 64-bit Windows 10 or later. To record power, accept the offer to restart as administrator.

Linux x86-64 — prismark-0.2.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz

Runs on Ubuntu 22.04 or later (or a distribution of the same age or newer), including a live USB session.

tar -xzf prismark-0.2.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
cd prismark-0.2.0-linux-x86_64
sudo chmod a+r /sys/class/powercap/intel-rapl:0/energy_uj # optional: power readings, until reboot
./prismark-gui

What's in it

  • Tests on all cores, on one core and for responsiveness, plus memory delay, timer punctuality and the gain from newer instructions (AVX2/AVX-512).
  • Compile tests included in both packages: "Compiling code" (Clang built in) and "Full software build" (sources, Clang 19, CMake and Ninja shipped).
  • Clock per core type and per CCX (P and E cores shown separately), and package power on Windows (admin) and Linux.
  • Rankings against four measured reference systems: Ryzen 7 8845HS (plugged in and on battery), Core i5-1035G1 and Core i9-14900K. The 14900K is delidded and overclocked, and is the best of two runs.
  • prismark command line in both packages (prismark help).

Beta: known limits

  • The Linux desktop app was tested under X11; under Wayland, if the window misbehaves, start it with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb ./prismark-gui.
  • A full run takes about 30–40 minutes. Don't touch the keyboard or mouse during the tests marked as needing an idle computer.
  • Results from 0.2.0 may not be comparable with later versions.
