Bug description
I am having problems opening the Linux Cinnamon default Desktop after doing mesa updates (mesa update Old Version: 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1 to New Version: 25.0.7-0ubuntu0.24.04.1).
Log in loop after doing mesa updates. I am not sure if this is a Linux problem or an update problem, but I don't know where to report a update problem.
Steps to reproduce
Make a Timeshift before installing mesa update !
Install mesa update (Old Version: 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1 to New Version: 25.0.7-0ubuntu0.24.04.1).
Log out and log back in, then problem happens every time (no Desktop).
Restore Timeshift and everything works, without mesa update being installed.
Inside of Updare Manager add mesa update to ignore list.
Expected behavior
Should be able to install mesa update and then log out and log back in, and load Desktop.
Additional information
I am having problems opening the Linux Cinnamon Desktop after doing mesa updates (Old Version: 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1 to New Version: 25.0.7-0ubuntu0.24.04.1).
I ran Update Manager and let it install all the updates, as I normally do.
I then logged out, but when I came back later the monitor had not went into standby mode and the monitor was still on the log in screen.
I went to log in and the screen basically flashed and came right back to the log in screen. I didn't see any part of the Desktop at all.
I tried changing my log in from the Cinnamon default to software rendering, but the same thing happened, right back to the log in screen.
I then tried changing to Wayland (experimental), In the past I have had random problems with different applications while logged in using Wayland (experimental).
Logging in under Wayland let me log into the Desktop and everything seemed normal, I ran Timeshift and went back to the day before, before all the updates were installed.
It restarted and then I was able to log back in normally under the Cinnamon default. I went right to the Desktop without any problems, so I figured an update had caused the problem.
I then proceeded to do the updates listed in Update Manager one at a time, and each time making a Timeshift and logging out and back in until I had a log in problem.
I found out that the problem was with an update called mesa, for that update I choose "Ignore the current update for this package" inside of Updater Manager.
Everything was working good without the update being installed, I then opened up Terminal and ran some checks from there.
I started by running "sudo apt update", it said "packages can be upgraded".
Then I ran "sudo apt upgrade" to see which packages, and I seen several upgrades with mesa listed in them and it asked me if I wanted to continue.
My thinking was that an upgrade was/is different from an update, and that maybe an upgrade might fix the problem caused by an update.
So I choose Yes to continue with the upgrades, once the upgrades had finished I logged out and then went to log in and the same problem, no Desktop.
I got back to the Desktop under Wayland (experimental) and used Timeshift again, and didn't reinstall the mesa update or upgrades.
Now Today I am seeing multiple updates for mesa inside of Update Manager instead of just the one, I am also seeing mesa updates on other computers.
Wondering what should I do, should I let all the mesa updates/upgrades install on all the computers, should the mesa updates/upgrades be installed, is there a way to get the mesa updates to work, do I need them...
I sure don't like updates not work and breaking things were you can't log in, reminds me of windows.
I also don't like the idea of not being able to log in the default way.
