uFits 0.0.10
uFits shows FITS, XISF and ASDF files in Finder: Quick Look previews (select a file,
press Space) and thumbnails for images, cubes, tile-compressed .fz files, spectra, light
curves, catalogs and tables, with every header.
New in 0.0.10
- Faster, above all with big files. On macOS 15.4 and later, a plane of a big cube or
a zoomed-in part of a big image no longer reads the whole file. Previews and
thumbnails draw faster, many about twice as fast; compressed XISF images two to three
times as fast; and the next plane of a zlib-compressed ASDF cube no longer
decompresses the planes before it. The map of a huge catalog takes under a second,
whatever its size, and copying many rows of a table no longer holds up the preview. - Catalogs open on their rows: click Plot for the map of the sky. Light curves and
spectra still open on their plot, and Finder's thumbnails of catalogs are still maps. - No more "Background Items Added": uFits looks for updates when you open it (at most
once a day) instead of from a background job, which this version removes. - XISF files with more than 1 MiB of text in a property (a long processing history, say)
now open.
From 0.0.3 on, uFits says when a newer version is out (Update available in the
preview's bar) and updates itself when you open it. From 0.0.2 or earlier, update once
with the command below. See 0.0.9
for ASDF files, 0.0.8 for moving
around a zoomed-in image,
0.0.7
for the pixel galaxy icon and the App icon setting,
0.0.6 for thumbnails that fill
Finder's icons and the app's settings,
0.0.5 for XISF images and
0.0.3 for zoom and the FITS files
of X-ray missions.
Install with one command in Terminal:
curl -fsSL https://github.com/lmytime/uFits/releases/download/v0.0.10/install.sh | shIt downloads the disk image below, checks its SHA-256, copies uFits to Applications and
turns on its Quick Look extensions. Then select a FITS, XISF or ASDF file in Finder and
press Space.
To remove uFits, run the same command with sh -s -- --uninstall at the end.
Or by hand: open the disk image and drag uFits onto Applications. The app is not
notarized, so macOS blocks it at first: run
/usr/bin/xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/uFits.app, or open uFits and
click Open Anyway under System Settings › Privacy & Security. Then open uFits once to
register its Quick Look extensions.
Universal (Apple silicon and Intel), macOS 11 or later.
uFits 0.0.9
uFits shows FITS, XISF and ASDF files in Finder: Quick Look previews (select a file,
press Space) and thumbnails for images, cubes, tile-compressed .fz files, spectra, light
curves, catalogs and tables, with every header.
New in 0.0.9
- ASDF files, such as those of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope: every array in a
file (images, cubes such as Roman's raw ramps, and 1-D arrays) is shown, named by its
place in the file's tree (roman.data,roman.dq, ...), the science image first.
Arrays compressed with LZ4 (as Roman's pipeline writes them), zlib or bzip2 work too;
of a cube, only the plane on show is decompressed. Header shows the whole tree, and
Finder shows thumbnails of.asdffiles. - XISF previews draw several times faster.
From 0.0.3 on, uFits says when a newer version is out (Update available in the
preview's bar) and updates itself when you open it. From 0.0.2 or earlier, update once

uFits 0.0.6
uFits shows FITS and XISF files in Finder: Quick Look previews (select a file, press
Space) and thumbnails for images, cubes, tile-compressed .fz files, spectra, light
curves, catalogs and tables, with every header.
New in 0.0.6
- Thumbnails fill Finder's icons on Retina screens, sharp at any size, in icon and
gallery views. List and column views keep the file's own small icon. - Settings in the uFits app: thumbnails on or off, the stretch previews open with (one
setting for Quick Look and the app), and checking for updates, with Check Now. - An old copy of uFits elsewhere on your Mac (the first builds were numbered 1.0.0) could
make Finder's thumbnails on macOS 15, too small or upside down. The app now lists other
copies and moves them to the Trash, and the installer takes them out of Quick Look's use. - Uninstalling removes everything: the app, its settings and what it keeps in your Library.
From 0.0.3 on, uFits says when a newer version is out (Update available in the
preview's bar) and updates itself when you open it. From 0.0.2 or earlier, update once

Space) and thumbnails for images, cubes, tile-compressed .fz files, spectra, light
curves, catalogs and tables, with every header.
New in 0.0.5
- XISF images (PixInsight's format): previews and thumbnails of grayscale, RGB and Bayer
images, compressed (zlib, LZ4, Zstandard) or not, with their properties and FITS
keywords in Header. Contributed by Shihao Wang. - Thumbnails look like the preview: their automatic stretch now comes from the image as
the preview shows it, whatever their size (shrunk a lot, a big image used to look
brighter in its thumbnail). - uFits is open source under the BSD 3-Clause license.
From 0.0.3 on, uFits says when a newer version is out (Update available in the
preview's bar) and updates itself when you open it. From 0.0.2 or earlier, update once

quarter). - Updating keeps both Quick Look extensions on: the installer checks that macOS has
registered them, and tries again if not.

- Zoom into images and cubes: pinch, ⌥-click (⇧⌥-click zooms out), or scroll with ⌘ or
⌥ held. Zoomed in, the part on view is shown at full resolution. - A shorter bar: the image's size and type, or the table's rows and columns. The HDU menu
says which HDU is shown ("HDU 1 SCI") and what each holds when opened. - In Quick Look, the HDU menu and the Image/Table/Header switch answer clicks at once
(they waited half a second). - The FITS files of X-ray missions open by their own names:
.pha,.pi,.arf,
.rmf,.rsp,.rsp2,.evt,.lc,.img,.hk,.mkfand.dph. - uFits now tells you when a newer version is out (Update available in the bar) and
updates itself in a few seconds when you open it. It looks on GitHub at most once a
day; turn this off in the uFits app. (From 0.0.2, update once with the command below.)
