Deskside Radio 1.8.2

@markticulous markticulous released this 13 Oct 22:38

Install it, or update it, with one file

🖥️ Windows

Download Win-Install-or-Update-Deskside-Radio.cmd below and double-click it.

That's all — it fetches this release, unpacks it beside the browser profile the radio already uses, puts a shortcut on your Desktop and opens it. Windows asks once whether to run a downloaded file; after that there are no prompts, on this run or on any update.

Already have it? Run Deskside Radio - Update from the Start menu, or double-click that same file in your app folder.

🍎 macOS and 🐧 Linux

The above installer is a Windows script, so it is no use to you — but the radio itself runs perfectly well on both. Take deskside-radio.zip instead, unzip it wherever you like, and open index.html. On Linux there is a Linux - Create Desktop Shortcut.sh inside for a proper launcher; on a Mac the radio makes its own shortcut from the button in its top bar.

Deskside Radio is free, with no ads and no tracking. If it keeps you company, a coffee on Ko-fi keeps it going.

New features & enhancements

  • A song title too long for its line on the main radio now scrolls slowly along it, the same way it does on the mini radio, once the pulse that marks a new song has finished.
  • Song titles are tidier: a featured artist already named beside the artist is not repeated in brackets, and labels such as [Album Version] or (Explicit) are left off.
  • On the mini radio, the station name now sits level with the play button when no song title is showing.
  • On Windows, song titles read from the stream itself keep coming on a radio left playing all day. They used to stop after twelve hours.
  • The Deskside Radio - Update shortcut in the Start menu has its own icon: the radio with an orange install badge, in the same style as the browser shortcuts.
  • In the Analogue dial theme, the Deskside Radio name plate now matches the official wordmark: its letters are set into the gold and sit centred on the plate.

Bug fixes

  • Updating from the Start menu no longer runs the whole update a second time after "Press any key". Updating from 1.8.1 may still do it once, because the fix is in the new installer; from then on it will not.
  • The x on the update notice is now centred in its circle.

New features & enhancements

  • The heart on the Support button in Settings → Service is now orange, matching the heart in the thank-you box.
  • The heart is drawn rather than typed, so it looks the same on every system.
  • The installer window now opens at the left edge of the screen, the full height of the screen, so more of its output can be seen at once.

Bug fixes

  • On KISS 92.5 and other Rogers stations, a song’s title no longer appears ahead of the song. Titles are now held back about twenty seconds longer.
  • A song title that repeats part of itself, such as a featured artist added twice, now shows it once: "Dangerous (feat. Akon) [feat. Akon]" reads "Dangerous (feat. Akon)".

New features & enhancements

  • A Support block in Settings → Service, with a link to Ko-fi. Deskside Radio stays free; this is only for anyone who wants to chip in.
  • After ten hours of listening, a small card in the corner says so, once. It never covers anything you are doing, and Don’t ask again means it.
  • The Markticulous plate in the top bar now opens Settings at Service.
  • Supporters can choose a small adornment to sit beside the Markticulous plate in the top bar.

Bug fixes

  • None in this release.

On Linux there is a Linux - Create Desktop Shortcut.sh inside for a proper launcher; on a Mac the radio makes its own shortcut from the button in its top bar.

New features & enhancements

  • Three window sizes: Large, Medium and Small. The new button beside the pushpin steps through them, and Settings → Theme → Window size offers the same choice. The window shrinks to match. Until you choose, the radio opens at the largest size that fits your screen, so a small laptop screen gets Medium or Small.
  • In the mini radio, a song title too long for its line now scrolls slowly along it, with a gap before it starts again, instead of being cut off.
  • Station lists long enough to scroll now have a slide-pot scrollbar, a slider in a groove finished to match each theme, in place of the plain Windows bar.
  • Model One theme: the play button and tone knobs are evenly spaced, their labels and readings sit centred under them, and the speaker’s centre cap sits truer.

Bug fixes

  • Song titles on Rogers stations (KiSS, CHFI and others) now appear closer to when the song starts, instead of some way into it.
  • In the mini radio, the schedule countdown keeps its place at the end of the line instead of being pushed out of sight by a long song title.
  • On Windows, the optional song-title helper now hangs up on each station at once, instead of leaving the connection open for about a minute and a half.

New features & enhancements

  • Song titles: while a station plays, the line under its name shows the artist and title of the song that is on, for stations that publish it, and pulses briefly when the song changes. The mini radio shows it too. Stations that do not publish it keep their tagline.
  • On Windows, an optional helper reads titles from the stream itself for many more stations. It is off until you turn it on in Settings, and connects for about a second once a minute while such a station plays.
  • Settings has a new General tab, first in the row: song titles, Play on launch, Start when you sign in and the update check now live there.
  • The station finder matches the words you type rather than the exact phrase, and lists stations the directory could not verify instead of hiding them, so stations that only stream to their own country turn up.
  • The Add station key opens the Stations tab without starting a blank station, so you can search or add one yourself.
  • Opening a station in Settings scrolls it into view when it would have unfolded below the bottom of the list.
  • The mini radio shows whether it is live, connecting or stopped in its top-left corner, with the same coloured status light as the main radio.
  • Enhancements to seasonal themes.

Bug fixes

  • The "updated to" announcement after an update now shrinks to fit on every theme instead of running off the right-hand edge.
  • On Rogers stations, a new song title waits longer before it shows, so it no longer appears while the previous song is still playing.
  • On some laptops the window no longer resizes back and forth, with a scrollbar flickering, while it fits itself to the radio on opening.
  • Fixes in seasonal themes.

New features & enhancements

  • The "Add station" key fits its label better. If the words are only a little too wide for the key they are made slightly smaller; if they are much too wide they go onto two lines, "Add" over "station", so the key stays the same height as the ones beside it.
  • A station's name on a preset key starts scrolling a little sooner when you hover over it.
  • Enhancements to seasonal themes.

Bug fixes

  • Choosing a theme no longer leaves the window resizing back and forth for several seconds before it settles.
  • The "Add station" key no longer cuts its label short with an ellipsis.
  • Fixes in seasonal themes.

New features & enhancements

  • The clock in the top bar now reads either way round. It starts as 24-hour; click it to switch to 12-hour, and click it again to switch back. Whichever you pick is remembered and comes back next time.
  • The empty preset key now says only "Add station". It used to carry a second line describing the form it opens, which on a crowded row wrapped and made that key taller than the ones beside it.
  • That key also sizes its own label to fit its button, so it is no longer cut short on the faces set in a wide display type.
  • Enhancements to seasonal themes.

Bug fixes

  • The schedule chip beside the clock no longer steps sideways when the clock changes format, or at noon and midnight.
  • The clock takes the keyboard like any other control, and now draws the app's own focus ring rather than the browser's default box.
  • Fixes in seasonal themes.

On Linux there is a Linux - Create Desktop Shortcut.sh inside for a proper launcher; on a Mac the radio makes its own shortcut from the button in its top bar.

New features & enhancements

  • The preset keys now fade a long station name at its edges as it scrolls, the same way the readout above them does. They were still cutting theirs against a hard line, which showed as a join on the painted faces.
  • A key whose name is only a little too long is left alone and keeps its ellipsis, which says there is more to see better than a fade does. The fade appears only while a name is actually moving: when you hover a key, or for the station that is playing.
  • Both the readout and the keys now take their two edge widths from one shared pair, so the two can no longer drift apart.

Bug fixes

  • The segment, split-flap and 8-bit faces are properly left out of the feathering on their preset keys. Those displays are made of cells, which are lit or not, so a soft edge is wrong for them; the rule meant to exempt them was being outweighed and had no effect.
  • Enhancements and fixes in seasonal themes.

New features & enhancements

  • A station name too long for the readout now fades in and out at the edges as it scrolls, instead of being cut off against a hard line. Each edge softens only while the name is actually passing it, so the first and last words are never dimmed while you are reading them.
  • The segment, split-flap and 8-bit faces keep their hard edge on purpose: those displays are made of cells, which are lit or not, and a fade would read as a photograph of a screen rather than as the screen.
  • A long name returns to its start about 1.7 times quicker once it reaches the end, so there is less waiting before it reads again.
  • The "Add station" key now sizes its own label to fit its button, instead of being cut short on the faces set in a wide display type.
  • Enhancements to seasonal themes.

Bug fixes

  • A station added from the search and then deleted in the same sitting is offered again. Its button stayed on "Added" and greyed out, and only running the search afresh would bring it back.
  • A station found through the search now shows its stream address rather than offering it for editing. It is the one part of such a station already known to work. A station you add by hand still has an address you can type.
  • Fixes in seasonal themes.

New features & enhancements

  • On Windows, the update dot now breathes slowly while a new version has been published but not yet downloaded, and switches to its usual blink once the download is in place and a restart will apply it.
  • The radio's browser profiles are much smaller: caches capped at 4 MB, compiled graphics shaders no longer kept on disk, and Firefox's Safe Browsing and certificate-revocation lists turned off and removed. The installer clears what is already there.
  • Enhancements to seasonal themes.

Bug fixes

  • The "Updated to" announcement always shows all five blinks and its pause before the station name returns. On a PC busy starting up it was cut short, or the station name came back over the last blink.
  • The Windows scripts in the download now have Windows line endings. They had always shipped with Unix ones, which a batch file can stumble on.
  • Fixes in seasonal themes.
