There was some discussion over lunch about updating, forking, or abandoning the matlab jams implementation. This mostly stemmed from a total lack of interest in developing or maintaining such a thing, and the difficulty of working with json in matlab.

Can we discuss this more thoroughly before committing to a plan?

What do people think about JSONlab? It might not have all the bells and whistles we've grown to love in python, but it might suffice for simple io.

Of course I would like JAMS to be compatible with as many languages as possible (especially Python and MATLAB, since they seem to be the preferred languages for most MIR researchers). But, given that none of us seems to have the time to maintain MATJAMS, I might simply abandon it.

Regardless, JSONlab looks good, but I haven't done any MATLAB for years.

I just gave jsonlab a spin in octave, and it fails on parsing NaN.

EDIT: also fails on matlab. Le sigh.

So, maybe we should subtree this out to a separate repository to be updated and maintained independently of pyjams?

Yes, as long as everyone agrees, and we clearly state that we no longer
maintain JAMS for MATLAB.
