PTAL. U+005C is a bit weird because it is an "infix fence". I guess it is stretchy in case people do bad usage and don't properly surround fenced expressions with an mrow ; but for the real infix case it makes sense for me to be non-stretchy by default, like that's the case for similar symbols.
