Preen 0.7.1
Preen 0.7.1 — interface consistency and feedback fixes from a full design review.
Changed in 0.7.1
- The header names the running task (for example "Installing apps", "Scanning devices") instead of a generic "Working…", so a slow scan no longer reads as a frozen app.
- Navigation stays available while tasks run: the sidebar, page search boxes and the Dashboard's Open Logs button remain clickable; only task buttons pause until the queue drains.
- The firewall toggle is staged: like the other Optimize System rows, UFW changes are applied with Apply Changes, and disabling the firewall asks for confirmation there. It no longer applies on toggle.
- One look apply path: the redundant "Apply Preen Appearance" button is gone; Apply Look Changes applies the Preen theme together with any staged desktop-wide options.
- Keyboard shortcuts: F5 refreshes the visible page, Ctrl+F jumps to its search box, Ctrl+A selects all on Install, Manage and Deep Clean, Escape dismisses a notice banner.
Fixed
- Combobox dropdown menus, tooltips and the Services selected row now use Preen's own palette; they previously followed the system theme, which put dark menu text on Preen's dark surfaces under light system themes.
- Both colour palettes are generated from one design-token source, so light and dark can no longer drift apart; two dead tokens were removed.
- The AppImage build stages its files world-readable, satisfying the current appimagetool permission check.

Preen 0.7.0
Preen 0.7.0 — Snap management, update badges, scheduled maintenance and a Drivers page.
New in 0.7.0
- Snap apps in Manage Apps: installed snaps appear alongside Flatpak and APT with a Snap badge; base/platform snaps are protected rows; removal uses the same confirmed, polkit-gated batch path. snapd being absent is silent.
- Update-available badges: every scan checks APT (cached index, no network), Flatpak (
remote-ls --updates) and Snap (refresh --list); flagged rows show "Update available" and Update Selected with nothing ticked selects them all. - Automatic maintenance (Deep Clean): an optional systemd timer — daily, weekly or monthly — runs apt clean, autoremove, journal vacuum and Flatpak runtime cleanup on schedule. One confirmation and one administrator prompt to enable; disabling removes the units.
- Drivers page (new, under System): wraps
ubuntu-drivers devicesas searchable device rows with the recommended package badged and pre-checked, plus Install Selected and Auto Install (recommended) — both confirmed and polkit-gated. --doctorand the Dashboard now report snap, ubuntu-drivers and UFW availability;ufwandubuntu-drivers-commonjoin the suggested packages.
Fixed
- Manage Apps no longer misses installed applications: the desktop scan follows
XDG_DATA_DIRS(including~/.local/share), a failed batchdpkg -Squery falls back to per-file queries, localizedName[locale]entries are preferred, and packages shipping several visible launchers list one row per launcher.

Preen 0.6.0
Preen 0.6.0 — right-click Run / Install with Preen for AppImage files, a Downloads watcher, old-kernel cleanup and a firewall toggle.
New in 0.6.0
- Right-click integration: open any
.AppImagewith Preen — a small dialog offers Install for unknown apps and Run / Update from this file / Remove for installed ones. No main window, no scanning. - File manager menu: the AppImages page can add optional "Install with Preen" / "Run with Preen" right-click entries and make Preen the default app for
.AppImagedouble-clicks. - New CLI handlers:
preen --appimage-handler FILE,preen --appimage-run FILE(launch detached, no window),preen --deb-handler FILE(install with one polkit prompt). - Downloads watching: the AppImages page notices new AppImages as they finish downloading.
- Old-kernel cleanup in Deep Clean: removes kernel versions older than the running one plus one spare — the running kernel is never touched, sizes are measured first.
- Firewall toggle on Optimize System (UFW, applies immediately after confirmation).

Preen 0.5.0
Preen 0.5.0 — an AppImages manager, drag-and-drop installs, a round of selection fixes, the dark GTK 3 refresh, and complete release plumbing.
New in 0.5.0
- AppImages page: scans your Downloads folder for
.AppImagefiles, installs them with a menu entry and launcher icon at user scope, and lists already-installed AppImages. Installing an AppImage that is already installed replaces it — that is the update path. Uninstalling only deletes the copy Preen made. - Drag-and-drop: drop
.AppImagefiles anywhere on the window to install them, or a.debto install it with one polkit prompt. - Selection fixes: Manage Apps gained Select all / Clear; clicking anywhere on an Install, Manage or Deep Clean row toggles it; Select all and Clear both respect the active search.
- Dark GTK 3 refresh of all ten pages, Preen-only appearance, bundled icons, and honest package/cleanup states.
- Release plumbing: version-matched release builder with checksums, staged package documentation, privacy policy and security guidance.
packaging/install_appimage.sh/uninstall_appimage.shinstall Preen itself with desktop integration (make install-appimage/make uninstall-appimage).

Preen 0.4.0
Preen 0.4.0
A macOS-inspired design pass, a task queue that no longer drops background work, and a feature upgrade on every page.
Highlights
- Reliability fix: background reads and actions now run through a FIFO queue instead of being rejected while another task runs. Boot info, services, Deep Clean scans, snapshots and preferences now always load.
- macOS-inspired UI: grouped sidebar sections, a segmented Flatpak/APT switch, softer frosted cards, an SF-like font stack and refined status colours.
- Dashboard: new swap usage card and load average alongside CPU, memory and disk.
- Deep Clean: pip cache joins the scan, with select all/clear and a live counter of selected items and reclaimable space.
- Services: Restart action, running-only filter, result counts and correct green/red/grey status colours.
- Customize Look: desktop text scaling presets from 85% to 125%.
- Optimize System: choose the swapfile size (1, 2, 4 or 8 GB) instead of a fixed 2 GB.
- Backup & Restore: browse saved Timeshift snapshots inside the app.
- Logs: filter the view while the full history stays in memory.
- Catalogue: 55 curated apps across 10 categories (up from 45) and a new Flatpak Toolkit preset.
- Preferences: pick the page that opens on startup.
Install
Source code archives (.tar.gz and .zip) are attached to this release automatically by GitHub.
Build the installable packages from the tagged source in about a minute:
# Debian package (outputs dist/preen_0.4.0_all.deb)
./packaging/build_deb.sh
sudo apt install ./dist/preen_0.4.0_all.deb
# AppImage (outputs dist/Preen-0.4.0-x86_64.AppImage)
./packaging/build_appimage.sh
# Python wheel
python3 -m pip wheel . --no-deps -w distThe wheel, .deb and AppImage were built and verified locally before release, but this build environment cannot reach the GitHub asset-upload endpoint, so they are not attached here. Re-run the commands above on any normal network to reproduce the artifacts, or keep using the 0.3.0 binary assets while packaging locally.
First run tip: start with preen --simulate or flip the Simulate switch. Every action is previewed in Logs and nothing changes until you switch it off.
Verification
- 68 regression tests pass with no root, display server or network.
preen --check-catalogvalidates all 55 apps and 6 presets.- See the full CHANGELOG for details.
Preen 0.3.0
Preen 0.3.0 — system setup, deep cleaning and tuning for Linux (formerly "Zorin Optimizer").
Highlights

- Services & Boot — boot-time breakdown, slowest units, and searchable systemd service management with validated unit names.
- Rebrand — new name, new
preencommand, settings migrated to~/.config/preenautomatically. - macOS-inspired UI — colored sidebar tiles, bottom status bar, frosted-glass cards, vibrant pill buttons.
