Be Nice v0.2.0 (preview)
Bumps version to 0.2.0, rewrites STATUS.md, aligns README. Not merged, not tagged, not released. Draft release notes below.
Second preview of Be Nice — rewrite your Slack drafts into clearer, kinder messages. Pick from three versions (Polite, Shorter and Friendly by default; editable), replace in place, undo anytime. It never sends a message for you.
What's new since 0.1.0
- Works in Slack channels and thread replies, not only direct messages (regression 2026-10-28: 6/6 pass in a channel and its thread).
- Keeps the language of your draft (Chinese stays Chinese) and keeps a leading
[tag]prefix. - Mentions, links, lists and formatting are detected as rich content: copy-only, never replaced.
- Line breaks are preserved: Shift+Return lines and paragraphs separated by a blank line are restored exactly on Undo. If the layout can't be read safely, Be Nice offers copy only.
- Slack only: the Rewrite button no longer appears in other apps.
- The status pill now follows the message box after Replace and Undo.
- Editable styles, GitHub Copilot provider and a safer first-run (nothing is sent until you Save).
Install
- Download
BeNice-0.2.0-macos.zipbelow, unzip, move Be Nice.app to/Applications. - The app is not notarized (no Apple Developer ID): the first time, right-click → Open.
- Grant Accessibility in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Open Settings from the menu-bar icon and choose GitHub Copilot or enter an OpenAI-compatible base URL, API key and model. Local servers (Ollama, LM Studio) work; a remote endpoint receives your draft text.
Use
Type a draft in Slack, click Rewrite above the message box (or press ⌃⌥⌘Space), choose a card, edit if you like, Replace. Click Undo to get the original back.
Known limitations
- Apple Silicon (arm64) only; tested on macOS 26 only.
- Slack desktop only.
- Not yet verified: real Chinese IME composition, emoji, same-name conversations, window-title changes. Direct messages were last regression-tested before the final fixes (same composer code path as channels).
- Drafts with emoji, mentions, links, lists or formatting are copy-only.
- The status pill can cover the lower edge of the last message line.

- Verified in Slack direct messages with plain-text drafts. Channels, threads, mentions/links and Chinese input methods are not yet verified.

- Two conversations with the same name can't be told apart.
