Maybe removing comments (and unneeded whitespace: blanks and empty lines) in a preprocessing step would be easier (and also save some memory and cpu cycles for the real assembler passes).

The preprocessing could work on just 1 large multi-line string instead of the line-based approach the assembler is using for parsing.

That was a bit more coding than expected, but ure wasn't really helpful, so had to build my own state machine.... :)
