[RN 0.48] Crash Reported - SyntaxError: JSON Parse error: Expected '}'

Steps to Reproduce

1. Open my RN app
2. Use normally
3. App soon crash to homescreen, though not every time. My experience is if it's going to crash, it crash pretty soon after app launch. Or it doesn't crash until subsequent app relaunch. I haven't seen a similar crash like this before upgrading to RN 0.48.1.

It seems there is an issue with RN 48.1 and codepush.

I set up a brand-new blank project with RN 48.1 and the 5.0.0-beta version of code-push. I got it to successfully code-push an update once, and then it wouldn't update after that. I tried the codePush.sync function on a button and got the same behaviour (dialog appears, but clicking Install does nothing).

Downgraded to RN 47.2 and everything is working as expected - updates appear swiftly via 'install silently in background' and also by pressing the codePush.sync button.

Perhaps my test app is encountering a crash issue like yours on RN 48.1 and that's why the update isn't working?

If your app didn't crash to homescreen, it's not the same issue.

Yep, you're right. I didn't see crash, just a failure to update.

We've tested react-native@0.48.1 with react-native-code-push@5.0.0 several times and it works well for us. So could you please provide us with minimum versions of your apps so we would be able to reproduce the issue and investigate/fix it? You could also try to reproduce the issue on example app we provide in our repo or generate your own using app generation script: https://github.com/Microsoft/react-native-code-push/blob/master/Examples/create-app.js

I'm getting this error intermittently. I'm on react native version 0.47.1.

I think it'd be useful to share and compare dependencies in our package.json, if there's any pattern in possibly 3rd party packages at fault (on latest RN). I haven't seen a new crash yet since my original post, and I've upgraded RN to 0.48.3 today.

Also, does it make sense if the issue somehow relates to this one microsoft/code-push#511 (comment) ? In case of this issue I believe the server returns The service is unavailable body instead of json payload, that probably could cause the issue.
