Status of tests marked with pytest.mark.xfail are showing as unknown

Tests with xfail are showing up in the Problems tab because VSCode thinks they have been skipped for some reason. They have not been skipped; I can confirm running the test through the VSCode UI actually runs the test even though it is reported as skipped

I think desired behaviour would be to have a third, yellow, marker for xfails. xfails are neither failed nor passed test, but take a middleground. This would be along the lines of pytest, which puts xfails in its own category:

A yellow marker in the Testing view and as gutter would be the optimal solution.

It seems like using xfails is gaining some ground; they are e.g. argued for here and here.
