Track

I wanted to have a way to track my mood and accomplishments over time, keep track of my priority for the next day, as well as a basic journaling platform that was not pretentious or leading. Seemed like a good project and I had seen a few people on merveilles.town making some fun CLI tools in this vein, so I took a swing at it.

Inspo from lon by dstn.

  • Tracks mood, accomplishments, and journal entries
  • Saves data in an easy to read plaintext file in the root folder called ~/.track
  • Integrates with Tod to pull in completed accomplishments

Usage

The filepaths for both the Track file (and the Tod file if you use Tod) should both be in a .env file in the root directory of the program. The .env should use these exact variable names with {filepath} being replaced by your desired filepath:

TRACK_FP={filepath}
TOD_FP={filepath}

To reduce the friction of using this every day, I made an alias in my terminal so I can just write track to bring up the program and use any options I want following it:

alias track="python '/Users/your-username/track_directory/track.py'"

Take the above code and copy it into your ~/.bash_profile file. After completing this, run source ~/.bash_profile for the new changes to be active.

No options:

On prompting, input:

  1. Your mood on a 1-5 scale.
  2. A 50 character or less summary of your day.
  3. Your accomplishments for the day. When finished, leave the line blank and press enter.
  4. A longer journal entry of anything you feel is relevant.
  5. Your most important task for the next day.

This will save this data into a file named .track in your root folder, formatted like so:

---
20201011 (4) Spend time on programming, exercise, and work.

* Write daily tracker program
* Exercise with 1.5hr walk
* Brainstorm programming projects
* Vote in election

> Prepare for next week and resolve all open tasks

I walked farther south than I have since moving here, and I really like how quiet
the side streets are.

Been listening to vogue ball playlists all night.

With options:
  • ! - Print random daily entry.
  • accs - Print accomplishments of most recent entries.
  • add - Add timestamped note to journal.
  • help - Print help for program.
  • mood - Print graph plot and averages of mood using past entries.
  • overviews - Print headers of all recent entries.
  • y - Record tracking for previous day (if you forget the night before).
