Nimrod 2.2

Choose a tag to compare

@mixelpixx mixelpixx released this 03 Oct 00:33

Nimrod 2.2 fixes setup on Windows for the Microsoft Store version of Claude, and keeps Claude Code's research hooks pointing at the right copy of Nimrod.

Update

  • Already installed: nimrod update. If you use the Microsoft Store version of Claude, run nimrod setup once afterwards to add Nimrod to the apps 2.1 missed.
  • macOS and Linux: curl -fsSL https://nimrod.orchis.ai/install.sh | sh
  • Windows (PowerShell): irm https://nimrod.orchis.ai/install.ps1 | iex
  • Claude Desktop only: open nimrod.mcpb.

Fixes

  • Claude Desktop from the Microsoft Store is found. The Store app keeps its settings in a private folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Claude_…), so nimrod setup and nimrod status called it "not installed" and never added Nimrod to it.
  • The Claude Code that comes inside the Microsoft Store app is found too, so setup adds Nimrod to it, and nimrod status no longer says "not set up" when it is.
  • Claude Code's research hooks run the copy of Nimrod that setup installs in ~/.nimrod/bin. Running setup from a downloaded file used to point them at that file, and they stopped working once it was moved or deleted. 2.2 repairs this by itself the first time it starts.

Builds aren't code-signed yet; the install commands avoid security prompts. Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Nimrod 2.1

@mixelpixx mixelpixx released this 02 Oct 19:33

Nimrod 2.1 reads pages much better: their main content, PDFs included, in sizes an AI can use. Search results now carry dates and related questions, and research picks better sources.

Update

  • Already installed: nimrod update
  • macOS and Linux: curl -fsSL https://nimrod.orchis.ai/install.sh | sh
  • Windows (PowerShell): irm https://nimrod.orchis.ai/install.ps1 | iex
  • Claude Desktop only: open nimrod.mcpb.

Reading pages

  • A page comes back as its main content: the article, docs or post, with menus, ads, cookie banners and sidebars removed. Links are absolute, tables keep their columns, and formulas are read once.
  • PDFs are read: papers, datasheets, reports.
  • Long pages come in parts of 20,000 characters, each ending with where to continue and the page's other sections. A single read can't flood the context window any more.
  • extract_multiple_webpages returns each page's text, for up to 10 pages at once. It used to return a one-line summary per page.
  • Stack Overflow questions (with their top answers) and crates.io crates (with their versions and README) are read through those sites' public APIs.
  • Pages built with JavaScript, bot checks and sign-in walls get a clear message saying what happened and what to try instead.

Searching

  • Each result shows its site and date, with the calendar date next to "2 days ago". Clean URLs, and no more percentage scores.
  • Related questions and related searches, when Google has them.
  • New country filter; date filters from the last hour to the last year. Image results include the image URL.
  • Mistyped filters are refused with an explanation, and don't cost a credit.

Research

  • Sources follow Google's ranking, at most two per site.
  • Pages that can't be read are replaced by the next result.
  • Depth sets how many sources are read (3, 5 or 8), and the searches run in parallel.

New and optional: page scraping (costs credits)

nimrod scrape on (or the "Scrape pages" switch in Claude Desktop) adds scrape_webpage, which renders a page in a full browser remotely, for pages Nimrod can't read on your computer. It costs 1 to 5 credits per page, more than a search, and it's off unless you turn it on. Reading further into a page you've scraped is free.

Also

  • nimrod setup and nimrod status find Claude Code when it's installed only as part of the Claude desktop app.

Builds aren't code-signed yet; the install commands avoid security prompts. Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Nimrod 2.0

@mixelpixx mixelpixx released this 02 Oct 02:39

Nimrod now runs on your computer. Searches go through nimrod.orchis.ai and use credits; web pages are fetched and read by Nimrod on your computer, never by our servers, and are free.

Install

  • macOS and Linux: curl -fsSL https://nimrod.orchis.ai/install.sh | sh
  • Windows (PowerShell): irm https://nimrod.orchis.ai/install.ps1 | iex
  • Claude Desktop only: open nimrod.mcpb and leave the key field empty.

What's new

  • Sign in through your browser with your email. No key to copy (API keys still work).
  • nimrod setup adds Nimrod to Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Codex, Gemini CLI and LM Studio, without touching other entries.
  • nimrod status, nimrod update, nimrod uninstall.
  • One Claude Desktop bundle for Windows and macOS.
  • The page reader refuses addresses on your own computer or network unless you set NIMROD_ALLOW_PRIVATE_URLS=1, and no longer crashes on certain characters.
  • The claude.ai connector (web and mobile) is now search only: web page extraction runs locally only.

Builds aren't code-signed yet; the install commands avoid security prompts. Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Nimrod Desktop 1.1.1 — hardening release

Security and robustness fixes from a full internal review (no feature changes):

  • Provider network-error messages are now guaranteed to never include request URLs.
  • research_topic accepts at most 5 focus_areas per call (extras are ignored); the tool description and pricing docs already reflected 1 credit per search.
  • On macOS/Linux, ~/.nimrod/config.toml (which stores your API key) is now written with 600 permissions.
  • Releases now include SHA256SUMS.txt so you can verify downloads.

Everything else is identical to v1.1.0: six research skills, deep-research agent, search-coach hooks (Claude Code), free local extraction, metered search with your key from https://nimrod.orchis.ai/portal.

Nimrod Desktop 1.1.0 — hooks, macOS, and Linux

The full research toolkit, now on every desktop platform:

  • New: search-coach hooks. Two Claude Code hooks install automatically — search-craft fires before every google_search and research-scope before every research_topic, injecting query-crafting and scoping guidance so every metered call is a considered one. Registered and removed cleanly in ~/.claude/settings.json; your existing hooks are never touched.
  • New: macOS build — nimrod-desktop-macos is a universal binary (Apple Silicon + Intel). chmod +x it, then run xattr -d com.apple.quarantine nimrod-desktop-macos once (not yet Apple-signed).
  • New: Linux build — nimrod-desktop-linux (x86_64, glibc 2.35+).
  • nimrod.mcpb for Claude Desktop on Windows (double-click, paste key).

Setup: run nimrod-desktop setup with your key from https://nimrod.orchis.ai/portal (new accounts get a free 50-credit trial), then claude mcp add nimrod -- /path/to/nimrod-desktop. Six research skills, a deep-research agent, and the hooks install themselves on first run; nimrod-desktop uninstall removes everything.

Search is metered (1 credit = 1 search). Webpage extraction and research synthesis run on your machine — free, and the pages you read never transit our servers.
