v8: fully English, install-anywhere

A fresh clone of X Virality Score now comes up in English with neutral defaults, needs no personal data, and runs offline out of the box.

English, neutral defaults

  • config/watchlist.example.json defaults to "lang": "en" and "timezone": "UTC", and uses placeholder accounts (example_account, another_handle).
  • board/data.example.json and the board UI use @your_handle. The board labels are English (X Score, Day Target, Outsiders · last 48h).
  • The demo and article HTML assets now use sample placeholder handles instead of real X accounts (#3).
  • Russian is still there if you want it: set lang to ru for Russian verdict labels and a Russian ping.

Setup and watchlist guides

  • docs/SETUP.md is the full install: fork, template, or clone; GitHub Pages in a separate public board repo; setting your handle; building the watchlist; the first real day; reading the board; the optional experiment; troubleshooting and FAQ. It covers both the Grok Bot path and running standalone.
  • docs/WATCHLIST.md explains who to add (about 15 to 30 peers, ideally under about 50k followers) and how to keep big aggregators in trend_input_only so they feed keywords without showing up as hits.

4 example niche configs

config/examples/ has starter watchlists with matching x_keywords.core and keyword_domain_terms:

  • ai-dev-tools.json
  • crypto.json
  • indie-hackers.json
  • marketing-creators.json

All handles were checked on 2026-10-27. Follower counts will change.

Offline sample day, smoke test, and CI

  • fixtures/sample-day/ holds a fictional day (timeline, radar inputs, prior keywords, X keyword samples) that never calls X.
  • bash scripts/smoke_day.sh runs the whole pipeline on those fixtures. It builds a board preview in board/.smoke-preview/ and prints an English ping. It also checks that the defaults stay neutral (lang en, timezone UTC, placeholder accounts, no personal handles) and that no Cyrillic appears in user-facing files while lang is en.
  • .github/workflows/smoke.yml runs that smoke test on every push and pull request.
