Feature Request: Quote Categories and Filtering
#8496
Hi, I had an idea about introducing categories to the existing quote mode, allowing users to choose the types of quotes they'd like to practise typing.
Currently, users can filter quotes by length, but I think adding the ability to filter by content would make the mode more engaging and personalised.
Proposed Categories
Some possible categories could include:
Movies & TV Shows, dialogue from films and television
Music, song lyric extracts
Famous People, quotes from notable figures
Literature, quotes from books and other writing
There could also be an "All Quotes" option to preserve the existing experience for users who prefer randomly selected quotes.
I think this feature could give users another reason to spend time typing. For example, someone who enjoys films might find typing recognisable movie dialogue more engaging than random quotes.
How It Could Work
The categories could be integrated into the existing quote mode as an additional selection menu, allowing users to filter quotes by category while retaining the current length options.
I think this would complement Monkeytype's emphasis on customisation and make quote mode more enjoyable, particularly for users who prefer typing content from media or topics they're interested in.
Implementation Considerations
I realise this would require some changes to how quotes are organised, particularly when categorising existing quotes.
Looking through the repository, I noticed that quotes are currently organised into JSON files by language, with individual quotes containing properties such as text, source, id and length.
One possible approach could be to introduce an additional category property to each quote, such as "category": "movies_tv". This could allow quotes to remain in their existing language files while supporting filtering by both category and length, without requiring entirely separate files for each category.
An initial implementation could focus on categorising quotes already available in Monkeytype, rather than introducing large amounts of new content. Quotes without an assigned category could also remain available through the All Quotes option.
I also came across discussion #2790, which suggests categorising quotes more generally. My proposal builds on that idea by suggesting specific content categories and a way to select them within the existing quote mode.
Contributing
I've already forked the repository and set up the development environment locally, and I'd be interested in implementing this feature if it's something the maintainers would be open to.
I'd appreciate any feedback on whether this would be a worthwhile addition and how it might best fit into the existing quote system.
I'm happy to work on implementing this myself, or collaborate with other contributors if anyone is interested in helping out!
