Remote motionEye Cameras

MichaIng edited this page Oct 29, 2026 · 1 revision

A motionEye server can show the cameras of other motionEye servers next to its own. The server you open in the browser is then the hub, the others are remotes. The hub shows the remote cameras' live view and media, and forwards changes to their settings to the remote, which stores and applies them.

To add one, open the settings, choose add camera ... at the end of the camera list at the top, set the camera type to Remote motionEye Camera, enter the remote server's URL and its Remote Secret (the Client Secret shown in the remote server's general settings), and pick the camera from the Camera list. On 0.43.x and older there is no Remote Secret: enter the remote server's admin username and password instead.

For an https URL with a self-signed certificate, turn off Verify certificate for that camera (from 0.45 on). On 0.44.0 and older, set validate_certs false in the hub's motioneye.conf instead and restart motionEye; this turns certificate checking off for all remote cameras on that hub, not just this one.

Some settings stay on the hub and are not sent to the remote: the connection details under Edit Credentials (URL, Remote Secret and Verify certificate), Admin-only access, and whether the camera is enabled on the hub.

Supported versions

Hub \ Remote 0.43.x and older 0.44.0 0.45 (development)
0.43.x and older same version recommended no no
0.44.0 no yes yes
0.45 (development) no yes yes

0.44.0 changed how hub and remote authenticate, so 0.43.x and older cannot be mixed with 0.44.0 and newer. The change came in 0.44.0b2: the betas b2 and b3 already use the new method, b1 still uses the old one. Mixing versions before 0.44.0 was not reliable either: a newer remote can refuse a save from an older hub's form, for example a 0.42.1 hub with a 0.43.1 remote.

Between 0.44.0 and 0.45:

  • Settings added after 0.44.0 (Use TLS (FTPS), Delete Files After Upload, and Verify certificate for uploads, mail and web hooks) cannot be changed from a 0.44.0 hub, and have no effect on a 0.44.0 remote. A 0.45 remote keeps the values set on it directly.
  • A remote on 0.44.0 turns its own Admin-only access off for a camera each time a hub saves that camera's settings. 0.45 keeps it (#3483).
  • A 0.44.0 hub hides the streaming password field of a 0.45 remote camera that has one set. Saving leaves that password unchanged; to change it, use the remote directly.
