VM Boss 1.0.1
- The free trial is harder to reset or extend: every account on a Mac shares it, its dates
can't be edited, setting the clock back stops it, and it ends in an app that's left open.
Trials started in 1.0.0 start afresh. vmctlchecks the trial the same way as the app.
VM Boss 1.0.0
Install: download VM-Boss-1.0.0.dmg, open it and drag VM Boss to Applications. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Website: https://vm-boss.com
VM-Boss-1.0.0-sources.tar is the exact source of QEMU and the libraries included in the app, with the script that builds them. SHA256SUMS lists the files' checksums.
First release, for Macs with Apple silicon running macOS 14 or later. Nothing else to
install: VM Boss includes QEMU and downloads every system from its maker.
Guests
- Windows 11 on Arm on the bundled QEMU with Apple's hypervisor: downloaded from
Microsoft's page inside VM Boss in any of its 38 languages, Home or Pro, installed
unattended (VirtIO drivers, local account) and finished without a click; a display that
follows the window, Ctrl-Alt-Delete. - Linux on Apple's Virtualization framework: 14 distributions in 34 versions (Ubuntu,
Fedora, Debian, openSUSE, Kali, Parrot, NixOS, deepin, AlmaLinux, Rocky, CentOS Stream,
Void, Gentoo, Alpine), each downloaded or installed from your own ISO, and Custom for any
other ARM64 Linux from a file or a link. - Android on Google's Android Emulator, which VM Boss downloads with the newest Google Play
system image (or Android Studio's SDK): phones and tablets shown and controlled in VM
Boss's window. - iPhone and iPad as devices in Xcode's iOS Simulator (iOS can't run in a VM); VM Boss
links to Xcode when it's missing.
VM Boss Pro
- Linux is free; Pro unlocks Windows, snapshots and clones, and in the direct download
Android, iPhone and vmctl, with a 14-day free trial. - Buying Pro opens soon. Until then, every Pro feature is free to try for 14 days.
- This direct download checks license keys offline. A Mac App Store edition (Windows and
Linux, with Apple's in-app purchase) is on the way.
Running VMs
- Start, shut down, stop, pause, restart; suspend and memory snapshots (Linux, Windows);
APFS snapshots and instant clones. - Shared (NAT) networking.
- Connecting and ejecting ISO images (Windows while it runs), serial console, event log,
screenshots. vmctl, a command-line tool for everything above.
Experimental (hidden in release builds; VMBOSS_EXPERIMENTAL=1 turns them on)
- macOS guests; direct kernel boot and other operating systems.
- Shared folders, clipboard sharing, Rosetta for Linux, nested virtualization, microphone
input. - Port forwarding, vmnet virtual and host-only networks, bridging.
- Extra data disks, connecting disk images to running Linux VMs, exporting.
