When I tried to install groff, the builder failed and complained that the program 'makeinfo' was missing.

Then I tried installing the 'texinfo' package and building again. Magically, it worked! I believe two things are happening: 1) the groff package has an undeclared dependency and 2) it is not being built with proper isolation, for whatever reason.

I'm building on OS X 10.6.8.

@noahl, when you say that the builder "complained", do you mean that the build actually failed? Or did it just issue a warning? If at all possible, could you please provide a log of the exact build output?

I'm asking because the build of groff should succeed without having makenfo installed. The source tarball contains pre-compiled info files:

groff-1.20.1/doc/groff.info-2
groff-1.20.1/doc/groff.info-1
groff-1.20.1/doc/groff.info
groff-1.20.1/doc/groff.info-3

When makeinfo isn't available, these files are just copied into place without being rebuilt. The build issuses a warning about this, but it will succeed anyway.

I think I did mean that it failed, but unfortunately I couldn't reproduce
this when I tried again just now. The issue may be gone. In any case, I
suppose you should close this bug.

Thanks,
Noah Lavine
