MacOS Setup Instructions

Manual Pre-Setup

  • Install homebrew (see ./pre-setup.sh)
    • The first thing brew does is to install the Xcode command-line utilities (these are needed for other things as well); if you do not get a popup, manually run xcode-select --install
    • Run eval "$(/opt/hombrew/bin/brew shellenv)" in the shell you will run ./pre-setup.sh in
    • You do not need to run the command suggests to add Homebrew to your path (it’s already in .profile)
  • Install nix if will use (see ./pre-setup.sh)
  • Optionally follow yabai setup instructions if you want to be able to manipulate spaces
  • Clone this repo if necessary (git clone --recurse-submodules <url>)

Optional (haven’t decided on best way to install poetry, currently installing through nix):

  • Install poetry (recommended method is not packaged)

Automatic Setup

Run ./pre-setup.sh then ./setup.sh. Enter password as necessary. Reboot afterwards. After the initial setup, dots can be used to run setup.sh from anywhere. See dots --help for more information.

Manual Post-Setup

  • Swap command and control for external keyboard in system settings
  • Run p10k configure to fully set up shell prompt; I’ve decided to continue to do this rather than store the generated file in my dotfiles; it is very quick, and I might want slightly different behavior for different computers

If you are using karabiner for keyboard layout:

  • Add Colemak-DH as input source (after installing karabiner)

If you are using tmux (currently not):

  • Run <prefix> I to install tmux plugins (after installing/running tmux)

Also install firefox/addons including tridactyl.

  • Open a new tab so tridactyl is activated
  • Run :installnative and follow instructions
  • :source ~~/.config/tridactyl/tridactylrc and restart firefox (necessary for setprefs to take affect and start saving browser session)
  • Set up webcam/audio
  • Configure docker to run at startup

Notifications:

  • Change Microsoft Teams notification setting to use Mac notifications and enable/allow notifications in System Settings for Teams
  • Also allow zoom notifications and notifications for any other apps you want notifications from
