I propose for initiating local Nodejs community chapters around the Globe like - Google Developers Groups, Facebook Developers Circles, etc.
Benefits -

  • Involving more developers and techies in the community
  • Getting more node modules/packages out of the chapters by motivating developers in the chapters
  • Promoting NodeJs technologies and tools

I don't know whether Nodejs foundation has any already plans regarding this, but we can officially/or unofficially start a Nodejs Open Community like NodeSchool and meanwhile reach more audience and developers.

+1 on this, but I'm not sure if Nodejs can collaborate with already existing communities like NodeSchool? Rather than building a new community from start.

It'd be better because a lot of people are familiar with NodeSchool, I'm sure all their chapters have volunteers and organizers. In short, everything is already in flow.

NodeJS communities would (and do bring) real benefits. I'm +1 initiates like this that push for more. If there are benefits to local community chapters distinct from NodeSchool, it's worth talking about 💪

As @WaleedAshraf brings up, NodeSchool has existing infrastructure. Through the website-redesign initiative, there's an opportunity for closer collaboration with NodeSchool. I think it would be helpful to be aware of the outcomes of spreading our resources too thin.

Adding more to this issue, I think this can be very helpful to @nodejs/community-committee.
CommComm is one of the most active WG. We have weekly meetings, an awesome team which actively respond to user issues and listen to their concerns. But I think it also needs a physical presence like chapters or collaboration with NodeSchool.

It can be also helpful to existing commcomm initiatives/issues like

This is also related to Evangelism initiative as its purpose is to

Bring discussions to a wider audience and attempt to grow the community through positive, supportive messaging.

I recently joined NodeSchool Lahore, Pakistan chapter and looking forward to organizing different Nodejs/JavaScript related talks. As a CommComm Observer, I would also like to talk about its initiatives.

I believe a collaboration with NodeSchool or having such chapter gives WGs members/observers a platform to easily interact with Nodejs users/public which is really important for CommComm WG (maybe not for other WGs).

I don't have any particular opinion one way or another on this - love the idea, and the Evangelism WG attempted something exactly like this in the past. Quite a bit of prior work in that directory that y'all could base this off of. This also aligns with the idea of community-events which was a CommComm initiative but never received enough traction - though @PatrickHeneise did express an interest in continuing it if there were others who were interested besides himself.

That said, you'd probably want to bring this up to the CommComm if it's going to be an initiative under the CommComm. We recently discussed the idea of champions and them not needing to be CommComm members, but I don't know the status of that and the group that discussed it didn't have quorum to make that official.

Love the idea! I wasn't able to put my ideas in a concrete proposal like this before. I'll help wherever I can. Thanks for the heads up, @bnb.

Closing stuff that has been inactive for more than a year in this repo, but if someone plans on picking this up, just go ahead and re-open! No strong opinions from me. Just tidying.
