  • o8 next is now o8's window on Mac. The classic window no longer opens. The Dock icon, the menu bar icon and Cmd+Shift+Space all bring o8 next forward, or open it if you closed it.
  • Fn dictation types into o8 next's focused field.
  • The Update button in o8 next installs the update itself, shows download progress, and restarts into o8 next.
  • Inbox: settle a thread to clear it, and o8 moves on to the next one. Undo is in the toast. Settled threads stay settled after a restart.
  • Sidebar: Chronological and By repo views, a repository filter, and New thread. Projects can have their own icon, emoji or monogram, chosen on the Projects page.
  • Composer: slash commands with completion, quick actions, saved prompts, and a mode for each thread that it remembers.
  • Right panel: Files with search, Quick docs, file editing and diffs; Browser pages and tabs; Devices; Activity; and workspace notes (o8.md) with inline images. Panel tabs scroll with the mouse wheel and the layout is saved.
  • Activity: packet cards, mission controls, recurring problems you can accept, stop or suppress, and proposals you can review.
  • The conversation shows a live thinking trace, saved branches and how long each turn worked, inline charts, and older turns as you scroll up.
  • Switch between Light, Dark and All Glass while o8 next is running.

What’s changed

O8 uses far less CPU in the background.

  • O8 uses far less CPU in the background. The check for merged lanes no longer re-runs git for every commit on main every 30 seconds, fetches each repository once per check, and never runs two checks at once.
  • Workers that a chat launches into its own checkout keep running. o8 no longer stops them after 10 minutes as orphans.
  • A browser you close from a chat goes to picture-in-picture and stays with that chat. It no longer floats over Pull requests, terminals or other pages.
  • Sidebar chat rows keep the repo name whole, so a long title shortens instead of cutting "o8-relay" down to "o…".
  • A stopped worker's pane says Interrupted instead of Idle and offers Resume and Retire. If the worker can't be resumed, the pane says it can't take new messages instead of silently hiding the composer.
  • Inbox tabs fit on one row, and cards in the mixed Inbox say "item" and "Dismiss" instead of "incident".
  • Previews of pages with no head tag keep standards mode, so they render the same as in a browser.
  • Chat and transcript search find what you meant despite one misspelled word. Those results rank below exact matches and are marked "Approximate match".

What’s changed

Reloading a chat keeps your reading position.

  • Reloading a chat keeps your reading position. If you were at the bottom, it stays at the bottom and keeps following live output.
  • Long chats keep their message order, visualizations and compaction history through compaction and reload, and completed turns keep their tool results.
  • Chat images and saved visualizations load again after a reload.
  • A worker that fails to launch shows why, with a Retry, instead of a bare HTTP 500. An interrupted worker can be resumed or retired from its own thread.
  • When o8 recovers a lost runtime session, the chat says so instead of carrying on silently.
  • Errors show the real message and where it happened, instead of minified source. Worker catalog and shared-checkout failures name what failed and what to do next.
  • Live agent activity is one short, honest line, and compaction shows as a small status instead of a banner.
  • The message queue no longer keeps copies of screenshots it already delivered, so its storage stays small.

What’s changed

Usage analytics count the first successful worker launch, first completed merge, and clean or unclean backend session endings.

  • Usage analytics count the first successful worker launch, first completed merge, and clean or unclean backend session endings. The existing opt-out and first-run gate apply to every event; no content or new identity fiel
  • Native sidebar row archive and Archived section
  • Open o8 next on its own
  • Linux voice: whisper.cpp dictation, X11 push-to-talk, system TTS
  • Let a direct OpenRouter key choose its text model (O8_OPENROUTER_TEXT_MODEL)
  • Opt-in glass surface on the Linux shell (O8_LINUX_GLASS=1)
  • Run the required CI checks locally with one command
  • Daily product numbers report

What’s changed

  • Stop works while a worker is still launching, and no worker starts after you stop it. A failed worktree setup now shows its cause within seconds instead of leaving the dispatch queued.
  • Worker setup is batched, so dispatch to first output dropped from about 12.1 to 9.8 seconds on the speed fixture. Workers also resume by themselves when a usage window resets.
  • The server stays responsive under load. The worst event-loop stall on the test setup went from 567 ms to about 110 ms, with no wedges.
  • Agents spend fewer tokens per turn. Built-in tool definitions load on demand (the default tool list went from about 33k to 13.4k tokens), and prompt prefixes stay warm for the session.
  • Typing in a terminal echoes immediately.
  • Codex app chats show only your own words. o8's instructions stay out of the visible message.
  • Unsent steering drafts survive a reload and stay with their session.
  • Merge preview lists every gate that would block the merge, with the action that clears each one.
  • Idle memory is bounded. Transcript caches keep small summaries instead of whole histories: in a 96-session fixture, the two server processes went from 1,143 MB to 341 MB after activity.
  • Background tabs and hidden windows no longer repaint unchanged transcripts, and they catch up as soon as you return.
  • GitHub lists keep their cached data when a refresh comes back malformed. Pull request checks show neutral and skipped results as neutral, not as failures.
  • Send Feedback is in the Help menu.
  • Compact chat overlays have a readable backing, and sidebar popovers close with their column.
  • Experimental: o8 next, a native GPUI client (transcript, diff and review, pane grid, terminal, composer and app shell), and o8d, a Rust service for live events and reads. Both are opt-in; the app you install is unchanged.
  • Thanks to the outside contributors whose pull requests are in this release.

  • o8 opens faster. The window paints in about 0.7 seconds instead of about 4.4 in a release build, because permission rules are compiled once instead of once per command. That also frees about 480 MB of memory.
  • Workers start faster. Dispatch to a ready worktree takes about 8 seconds instead of about 35: installed dependencies are reused across commits, a ready copy is moved into place instead of copied, and the launch checks run in one process instead of ten.
  • Typing while an agent works now steers it by default, and the composer says so. Codex leads take the steer in the middle of their current turn instead of after it.
  • Task dispatch over MCP returns its receipt right away, and progress follows in mission_tail, so agents no longer time out waiting for a worker to start.
  • After a compaction the lead keeps its transcript in order, and compaction uses the conversation's own context.
  • Codex and other detached workers reconnect to their packets after o8 restarts.
  • Failed launches keep their cause. Backend readiness checks give up on time, queued dispatches say why they are waiting and when they retry, and lifecycle tools return the cause with a next step.
  • You can ask for a fresh update check.
  • Worker activity steps are grouped, dashboard tab titles match, and custom canvas backgrounds persist.
  • Merge and cleanup find Git even with a minimal PATH. Team presence follows the session instead of the process. Unsent steering drafts are kept per packet.
  • Effort choices that a runtime cannot honor are rejected before anything launches.
  • On Linux, workers recover their working directory without lsof.
  • The source repository moved to github.com/o8-run/o8. Old links redirect.
