ESTAMPIE 0.3.0 - the reader release
ESTAMPIE 0.3.0, the reader release: the FM-1's screen can now be read aloud, so you can play and edit ESTAMPIE without seeing its screen.
Install it from the browser at https://fm-1.drewr.dev/estampie/webapp/installer/ (Chrome or Edge), or install the .fwsc with FM1Kit or FM-SWITCH. Try it first in your browser at https://fm-1.drewr.dev/estampie/webapp/emu/.
What's new
- A screen reader for the FM-1 (new): ESTAMPIE tells a screen reader on your computer what its screen shows, using Charles Vestal's fm1-reader.
- Plug the FM-1 in, open https://charlesvestal.github.io/fm1-reader/ in Chrome or Edge, and press Connect. It reads with its own voice, or hands the words to your own screen reader (VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS, TalkBack).
- When it connects, or when you ask: the track and its sound, the page and its four knobs, the steps that are on, and whether it's playing.
- As you play: each new page with its knobs, a knob's value once you stop turning it, the menu's rows with their place ("3 of 8"), the sound the PRESETS knob picks, and messages. Warnings are read in full, questions come with the buttons that answer them, and each letter is read as you name a sound or a project.
- ESTAMPIE's own words: "ATK 12 ms" is read as "attack 12 milliseconds" and "DLVL" as "drone level". There are 276 words in all, checked against fm1-reader's rules with no errors. The words come from this site, so they cost the firmware no flash.
- No change for other software: the FM-1 says nothing until a reader asks, so a DAW on the same USB port sees nothing new.
- The browser version reads its screen too: under its panel, choose Your screen reader or This page's voice, then use Read the whole screen and Say it again.
- A new preview picture for links to the repository and the site.
Good to know
- This is new and tested in the simulator and the browser version; please tell us how it goes on a real FM-1.
- Firmware size: the screen reader adds about 6 KB, with about 34 KB still free.
- The guide's chapter 20 has a new section, "A screen reader": https://fm-1.drewr.dev/estampie/guide/
Thanks
Huge thanks to Charles Vestal for fm1-reader, and for making it something every FM-1 firmware can share. ESTAMPIE is built on Jason Persinger's GHOULBOX and Leo Kuroshita's Felucca (Hügelton Instruments), with thanks to everyone listed in the README and CREDITS.md.
This is early work. Make a backup before you install.
