Macalla 0.2.3

@kevin-burns kevin-burns released this 21 Oct 15:33

The disk image now shows where to drag Macalla, and the guide says which engines hear a language other than English.

Install

For Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 26 or 27. Download Macalla_0.2.3_aarch64.dmg below, open it and drag Macalla onto Applications. It is signed and notarised by Apple.

With Homebrew:

brew install --cask ogham-mcp/tap/macalla

Already installed with Homebrew? brew upgrade --cask macalla. Macalla does not update itself.

Changed

  • The disk image opens on a background with an arrow from Macalla to Applications, so it is clear what to drag where.
  • The guide has a section on speaking another language. Macalla has no language setting yet: it asks the engines on your Mac for English, and only Parakeet hears the language you speak whatever it is asked for. Choose Parakeet to dictate, or to record a meeting, in any of its 25 European languages, then translate the transcript on the Files page if you need it in English.
  • Two certificate-checking fixes in the libraries Macalla uses to download models and to connect to cloud providers (RUSTSEC-2026-0382 and RUSTSEC-2026-0381).
  • Tauri 2.12.4 and other dependency updates.

Not yet

  • A language setting.
  • Key combinations, such as Option with Shift, as the shortcut.
  • No public build for Windows or Linux.

Clipboard managers no longer keep a copy of each dictation, and dictionary words such as .NET and C# paste as written.

Install

For Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 26 or 27. Download Macalla_0.2.2_aarch64.dmg below, open it and drag Macalla onto Applications. It is signed and notarised by Apple.

With Homebrew:

brew install --cask ogham-mcp/tap/macalla

Already installed with Homebrew? brew upgrade --cask macalla. Macalla does not update itself.

Fixed

  • Clipboard managers no longer keep a copy of each dictation. Macalla pastes through the clipboard and then puts back what you had there. The text it puts there for the paste is now marked as temporary, so a clipboard manager that honours the mark leaves it out of its history.
  • Dictionary words that start or end with punctuation paste as written. .NET pasted as ..NET, and C# as C##. Now the punctuation appears once.
  • The built-in dictionary knows more ways of hearing kubectl and Kubernetes. Apple Speech can write a technical name differently each time; if it still gets one wrong, add what it wrote to your dictionary.
  • A meeting summary that finishes while Files is opening now shows. Before, it stayed hidden until the page was reopened.
  • The setup checklist names the engine you chose. It used to name the default engine, even after you had chosen and downloaded another.
  • A cloud model the list no longer offers is shown by name. The Models page said only "In use: OpenAI" when the saved model was not in the provider's current list. It now shows the model too.

Changed

  • Updated dependencies, including rustls, which Macalla uses to download models and to connect to cloud providers, to fix four security advisories.
  • The engine library for Parakeet, Nemotron and Whisper is updated to transcribe.cpp 0.4.0. Transcripts and speed are the same in our tests.

Not yet

  • Key combinations, such as Option with Shift, as the shortcut.
  • No public build for Windows or Linux.

Macalla no longer runs twice when it opens at login, and Files works after a model has been unloaded.

Install

For Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 26 or 27. Download Macalla_0.2.1_aarch64.dmg below, open it and drag Macalla onto Applications. It is signed and notarised by Apple.

With Homebrew:

brew install --cask ogham-mcp/tap/macalla

Already installed with Homebrew? brew upgrade --cask macalla. Macalla does not update itself.

Fixed

  • Only one copy of Macalla runs at a time. With Open Macalla when you log in on, a Mac that reopened its apps after a restart could start Macalla twice. Each copy listened for the shortcut, so one press could paste the text twice. Now a second copy closes as soon as it starts, and the first carries on.
  • Files works after the model has been unloaded. If Macalla had unloaded a downloaded model to free its memory, a file chosen afterwards failed. Now the model loads again first.
  • Translation uses the English you have installed. On a Mac set to British English, German was reported as missing when it wasn't. The card also checks again when you come back from System Settings.

Not yet

  • Key combinations, such as Option with Shift, as the shortcut.
  • No public build for Windows or Linux.

Choose your own push-to-talk key, and downloaded models now free their memory when you're not dictating.

Install

For Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 26 or 27. Download Macalla_0.2.0_aarch64.dmg below, open it and drag Macalla onto Applications. It is signed and notarised by Apple.

With Homebrew:

brew install --cask ogham-mcp/tap/macalla

Already installed with Homebrew? brew upgrade --cask macalla. Macalla does not update itself.

What's new

  • Change the shortcut. The Shortcut card lists Right Option (the default), Left Option, Right Command, Right Control, Right Shift and Fn. Or choose Record a key… and press the one you want. The shortcut is a single key held on its own, so it keeps working everywhere, even while you type a password.
  • Downloaded models free their memory when idle. Parakeet, Nemotron and Whisper are unloaded after 5 minutes without a dictation, and loaded again at the next one. To change the time or keep the model loaded, use Unload model on the Engine card.
  • The overlay says when a model is loading. If you press the shortcut while a downloaded model loads, the overlay says so. Start speaking when it says Listening. The first load on a Mac can take ten seconds or more.
  • About now credits transcribe.cpp, and the third-party notices include the libraries it builds in.

Not yet

  • Key combinations, such as Option with Shift, as the shortcut.
  • No public build for Windows or Linux.

The first release of Macalla: hold a key, say what you want to write, and let go. Your words appear wherever you were typing.

Install

For Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 26 or 27. Download Macalla_0.1.0_aarch64.dmg below, open it and drag Macalla onto Applications. It is signed and notarised by Apple.

With Homebrew:

brew install --cask ogham-mcp/tap/macalla

Macalla does not update itself. A new version is a new download, or brew upgrade if you installed with Homebrew.

What is in it

  • Dictation into any app: hold Right Option, speak, let go.
  • A dictionary of your own words that fixes what the speech engine gets wrong, on any engine. Select a misheard word in History and choose Add selection to dictionary.
  • Apple Speech by default, with nothing to download. Parakeet, Nemotron and Whisper models can be downloaded from the Models page.
  • Optional Enhancement to tidy punctuation and capitals: Apple Intelligence, your own server such as Ollama, or cloud models with your own key.
  • Optional cloud transcription with your own key.
  • History on your Mac, for 30 days at most, or less.
  • The Files page: transcribe a recording, open a transcript, record a live meeting, tidy it and summarise it.
  • Open Macalla when you log in, off until you turn it on.

Everything runs on your Mac unless you turn on something that sends your words elsewhere, and the overlay names where they go. Audio is never saved. No account, nothing to pay, no telemetry.

Not yet

  • The shortcut cannot be changed yet.
  • No build for Windows or Linux.
