zotkit cite KEY… prints one short citation per key: Laughlin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 50, 1395 (1983) (#12).
Authors: first author's surname, A & B for two, A et al. beyond.
Journal: the ISO 4 abbreviation, then volume, first page or article number, and year.
Preprints cite as Author, arXiv:<id> (year).
It works from the cached library listing (no CrossRef calls), and keys can also come on stdin.
An unknown key prints one error line on stderr and exits 1; the other keys still print.
ISO 4 journal abbreviations: journalAbbreviation is stored dotted ("Phys. Rev. Lett."), from one normaliser shared by create, enrich, audit and cite (ADR-0005). Its sources, most trusted first:
Registered forms: a table shipped with zotkit of 62 NLM MEDLINE abbreviations with ISO 4 periods restored and place qualifiers dropped. Your own verified rows can be added via ZOTKIT_JOURNALS.
Title: a journal title that is already abbreviated is taken as written.
Rule-derived candidates from LTWA word rules, using English and "Multiple languages" entries only.
These run only if you point ZOTKIT_LTWA at a copy you downloaded from issn.org. zotkit does not ship the LTWA.
Only a registered form may replace a stored value. A candidate only fills an empty field, and create notes when it does that.
audit gains a journal-abbreviation check with two parts:
To fix: values enrich --missing abbreviation would change, labelled registered or candidate (rule-derived).
Unverified: every journal without a registered form, whatever is stored.
--json adds the keys journal_abbreviation and journal_unverified.
issue-date: YYYY[-MM[-DD]] in Extra: create and enrich add it when CrossRef's print-issue year differs from the year in date, which often holds the online-first date. Journal articles and conference papers only; cite uses it as the year.
Changed
create --doi (and --arxiv when it upgrades to the journal record) writes the registered abbreviation instead of CrossRef's short-container-title. With no registered form, CrossRef's value is kept as before.
enrich may correct journalAbbreviation to a registered form, which is a documented exception to fill-empty-only. This works without a DOI or arXiv id.
