Trade Clips 0.10.0 (not yet notarised)

@onesteele onesteele released this 23 Oct 02:31

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.10.0: 4K export, and a sharper review cut.

  • 4K videos export at 4K (3840 × 2160 sideways, 2160 × 3840 upright), so the clip keeps the detail you recorded. A new clip from a 4K video starts at 4K by itself.
  • Switch it under Format on the Video step (it was called Shape): Vertical or Horizontal, and 1080p or 4K. 4K is offered only for videos recorded at 4K, since it would only enlarge smaller ones. A clip made before this update starts at 1080p; press 4K to change it. With several videos, they're joined again at 4K first.
  • 4K takes longer. An export takes about three to four times as long and the file is about that much bigger. Instagram shows Reels at 1080p anyway; 4K is worth it for YouTube and the web.
  • The review cut is sharper: full 1080p, at higher quality, instead of half size. It's still quick to make.

Everything else works as before. Installing 0.10.0 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

Trade-Clips-0.10.0-arm64.dmg is the app: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The page and How-to-install-Trade-Clips.pdf walk through installing it, including the one-time "Open Anyway" approval (this build isn't notarised by Apple yet).

The other files are the source code of FFmpeg, x264 and zimg, the free video engine built into the app. Its GPL licence asks for them to travel with the app. You don't need them to use Trade Clips. SHA256SUMS.txt lets you check the downloads. The captions and the script matching come from whisper.cpp and OpenAI's Whisper speech model (both MIT licence), which run on your Mac; their licence is inside the app.

Trade Clips 0.9.0 (not yet notarised)

@onesteele onesteele released this 23 Oct 00:44

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.9.0: horizontal videos.

  • A video clip can be horizontal (1920 × 1080) as well as vertical (1080 × 1920). A new clip takes the shape of its first video: a landscape recording makes a horizontal clip, a phone video a vertical one.
  • Switch it under Shape on the Video step. Changing the shape refits the video (cropped to its centre, never stretched) and moves any text and captions to the same place on the screen. With several videos, they're joined again in the new shape first. Undo switches it back.
  • The preview holds the phone on its side for a horizontal clip, so what you see is what exports. Trade clips stay vertical.

Everything else works as before. Installing 0.9.0 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

Trade Clips 0.8.2 (not yet notarised)

@onesteele onesteele released this 23 Oct 00:21

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.8.2: videos stay in the order you recorded them.

  • Several videos added at once go in the order they were recorded. Finder hands files over in its own order. If your folder was sorted newest first, the clip was joined backwards, and Script left out every line said in the "wrong" video. Now each video's recording time is read from the file (or, if a file doesn't have one, its number in the name, like DJI_0040, DJI_0041), and they go in that order. You can still drag them into any order on Video.
  • Script spots a clip joined out of order. If a clip's videos aren't in the order they were recorded, and that order would match more of the script, Script says so ("Put in that order, 40 lines match instead of 14") with a Reorder button. One click puts them in order and cuts the clip again.

Everything else works as before. Installing 0.8.2 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

Trade-Clips-0.8.2-arm64.dmg is the app: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The page and How-to-install-Trade-Clips.pdf walk through installing it, including the one-time "Open Anyway" approval (this build isn't notarised by Apple yet).

Trade Clips 0.8.1 (not yet notarised)

@onesteele onesteele released this 22 Oct 23:58

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.8.1: Script cuts less, and you can fix any line by hand.

  • Fix where a line starts or ends. On Script, click a line. It opens to show the words said around it, with its start and end marked in yellow and the words that were cut in grey. Click a grey word to bring the line back to it, or move the Start and End a quarter second at a time. It plays around the end you moved, so you hear the change straight away. Reset puts it back, and ⌘Z undoes it.
  • Words said in the same breath stay in. People don't read a bullet-point script word for word, so the few words you say straight on either side of a line ("So on a" before "5x account") are now kept with it. False starts, "um"s and other takes are still cut.
  • Numbers match however they're said. "Five hundred dollars" matches $500, "five x" or "five times" matches 5x, and "twenty-five" matches 25. A number said in words is no longer cut off at the end of a line.

Everything else works as before. Installing 0.8.1 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

Trade-Clips-0.8.1-arm64.dmg is the app: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The page and How-to-install-Trade-Clips.pdf walk through installing it, including the one-time "Open Anyway" approval (this build isn't notarised by Apple yet).

New in 0.8: cut a video to its script.

  • Read your script on camera, as many takes as you need, in one video or several. Then open Script (under Video), paste the script and press Match to Script.
  • Trade Clips listens to every take on your Mac (nothing is sent anywhere), finds each line of the script, and keeps the last good take of each, in the script's order. False starts, other takes and the talk between are cut out. Cut Long Pauses also tightens the gaps inside a take.
  • Each line shows the take it uses. Click a line to play it, pick another take from its menu, or choose Left Out. ⌘Z undoes any change. A line it couldn't find is flagged.
  • Then fine-tune the cuts in Adjust, and add sounds, music, text and captions on Sounds & Text as usual.

Trade clips and video clips without a script work as before. Installing 0.8.0 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

Trade-Clips-0.8.0-arm64.dmg is the app: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The page and How-to-install-Trade-Clips.pdf walk through installing it, including the one-time "Open Anyway" approval (this build isn't notarised by Apple yet).

Trade Clips 0.7.0 (not notarised)

@onesteele onesteele released this 22 Oct 18:46

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.7: several videos in one clip, and deleting old clips.

  • New Video now takes several videos. Drop them in together, or click and ⌘-click to choose them. They play one after another, each filling the whole vertical 1080 × 1920 frame.
  • Each video is a card in the order it plays. Drag a card to a new place (or use ‹ › on it), × removes one, and Add Videos adds more. Trade Clips joins them into one video, with a progress bar and Stop. Your videos are never changed or moved.
  • On Adjust each video starts as its own part, so you cut, split and speed them up just like one video. Your cuts stay with each video when you add, remove or move one.
  • Sounds & Text and Export work as usual: sounds, music, text and captions over the whole clip.
  • On All Clips, press Select, tick old clips and press Delete, or Select All then Delete All. Deleted clips go to the Trash. Your recordings and exported videos stay where they are.

Trade clips and one-video clips work as before. Installing 0.7.0 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

Trade-Clips-0.7.0-arm64.dmg is the app: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The page and How-to-install-Trade-Clips.pdf walk through installing it, including the one-time "Open Anyway" approval (this build isn't notarised by Apple yet).

Trade Clips 0.6.0 (not notarised)

@onesteele onesteele released this 22 Oct 17:26

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.6: clips from any video.

  • Press New Video on the home screen (or ⇧⌘N) and drop in any one video. It fills the whole vertical 1080 × 1920 frame: a vertical video shows whole, and any other shape is cropped to its centre. Nothing is stretched.
  • There's nothing to line up or lay out, so the steps are Video, Adjust, Sounds & Text and Export. They work the same as for a trade clip: cut and speed up parts, then add sounds, music, text and captions, and export.
  • On Sounds & Text the two sounds are called First Sound and Second Sound.
  • After exporting, Next Video starts another one with the same sounds and music.
  • If the video is small enough that filling the frame makes it look soft, the app says so.

Trade clips work as before. Installing 0.6.0 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

Trade-Clips-0.6.0-arm64.dmg is the app: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The page and How-to-install-Trade-Clips.pdf walk through installing it, including the one-time "Open Anyway" approval (this build isn't notarised by Apple yet).

@onesteele onesteele released this 21 Oct 23:36

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.5: captions and thumbnails.

  • Captions, made on your Mac. In Sounds & Text, press Make Captions and Trade Clips writes out what you say in the clip. Nothing is uploaded.
    • Check every line: click one to correct it (Enter goes to the next), or delete it with the bin.
    • Choose the Length (1 Word, Short or Long), Size, All Capitals, style and colour. Drag a caption on the phone to move them all.
    • Captions show where the clip plays at normal speed, and at 2× when that part keeps its sound. The fast-forwards stay clean.
    • Changed the speeds or the start and end afterwards? Press Listen Again.
  • Save a thumbnail. On the Export step, pause the review cut or the exported clip on the frame you want (, and . step one frame) and press Save Thumbnail…. It saves that frame as a full-size JPEG (1080 × 1920), with the text and caption on screen then.

The app is about 190 MB bigger, because the speech model for captions is inside it.

Installing 0.5.0 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

@onesteele onesteele released this 21 Oct 21:20

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.4: Mark Trade is now Adjust.

  • Split the clip into parts. Press S (or Split Here) to cut the chart and face together at the playhead. Each part has its own settings:
    • Speed: Normal, 2×, 4× or 8×.
    • P&L on Screen: turn it off for a part where you explain on a zoomed-out chart, so no odd crop shows.
    • Framing → Edit…: move and size the chart and face for that part only. Press Done to come back.
    • Remove Part: leave a part out of the clip.
  • Start and End: press I and O, or drag the yellow ends on the filmstrip.
  • Nothing is required. Sounds & Text opens straight away, so a talking-head clip with music and text works too.
  • The filmstrip zooms with ⌘= / ⌘−, a pinch, or the buttons under it.

Clips made in 0.3 open as they were: their four marks become splits. Installing 0.4.1 replaces the older version, and everything already made in it stays.

@onesteele onesteele released this 20 Oct 23:30

Download page: https://onesteele.github.io/trade-clips-download/

New in 0.3.0: Sounds & Text, a step between Mark Trade and Export:

  • your own entry and exit sounds (while the clip plays, press E or X to place each one);
  • background music: add a long mix once and the app splits it into its songs. New Song Each Clip gives every clip the next one, and the music dips under the voice;
  • text with emoji over the clip.

Your sounds, music and levels carry over to the next clip.

Trade-Clips-0.3.0-arm64.dmg is the app: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The page and How-to-install-Trade-Clips.pdf walk through installing it, including the one-time "Open Anyway" approval (this build isn't notarised by Apple yet).
