Canopi 2.0.3
Canopi 2.0.3
A Web Edition update that keeps your Drafts safer in the browser and keeps open tabs working when a new version is published. Canopi Desktop has no new features; it gets one small fix it shares with the Web Edition.
Web Edition
Your Drafts and the browser's storage
Browsers may clear a site's saved data when space runs low. The Web Edition now asks your browser to keep your Drafts, and tells you when it might not.
- The first time you create or open a Design, a short line on the welcome screen says why Canopi asks this browser to keep your Drafts; then New or Open asks it once. Firefox asks you; Chrome, Edge and Safari decide on their own, often from how much you use the site, and may say no without asking.
- If the browser says no, or cannot keep them, the welcome screen and the save status warn that your Drafts may be cleared by this browser, and offer Download a copy.
- If you already have Drafts the browser is not keeping, the save status says so at launch. Click it (on a phone: Menu › File › Keep my drafts…) to read why, then choose Keep my drafts or Download a copy. The welcome screen offers the same.
- Each Draft on the welcome screen has Download a copy in its menu, so you can save any of them as a
.canopifile.
New versions while you work
- A tab left open while a new version is published keeps working: it can still open the PDF export, search the plant catalog and save, because each release keeps the previous release's files.
- When a tab notices that another version has been published, it shows one "New version" notice with a Reload button. You can dismiss it. Reload saves your Design first and reopens it; if the save fails, you can retry (unless another tab changed the Design), download a copy, reload without saving or cancel, and Cancel puts keyboard focus back on Reload.
- Tabs opened before 2.0.3 show no notice; reload them when convenient.
Plant catalog
- Searching the plant catalog loads only the parts of its files the search needs, instead of whole files.
Canopi Desktop and Web Edition
- The "Couldn't save" Details popover closes when focus leaves it or when a save problem dialog opens, and stays inside a narrow window.
Before you upgrade
Nothing to do. On the Web Edition, open tabs from 2.0.2 keep working. Installing Canopi Desktop 2.0.3 over 2.0.0, 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 keeps your Designs, Drafts, Data library and settings. On Linux, Canopi needs Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 or a newer distribution.
The installers are not signed yet. On macOS (12 or later), open Canopi once, then go to System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway; if macOS says the app is damaged, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Canopi.app in Terminal. On Windows, if SmartScreen appears, click More info › Run anyway.
The known limits of Canopi 2.0.0 still apply.

Canopi 2.0.2
Canopi 2.0.2
A fix and security update to Canopi 2.0 for Desktop and the Web Edition.
Fixed
- A site data raster keeps drawing after you change its colour ramp or range: switching a layer from Terrain to Relief, then back, or hiding and showing it, no longer leaves the map blank until a restart.
- Hiding the Plants layer hides the selected plant's name label too, and the label follows the layer's opacity.
- Closing Canopi when your settings can't be saved now says so. Your Design is saved first; then you choose Retry, Close anyway (losing the latest settings changes) or Cancel to keep working.
- A group holding a locked plant, zone or note can be clicked and selected again. Moving it is still refused, and a short message says why: "Locked: unlock to move". Unlock on the group unlocks the group and its members in one step, undone by one Undo.
- On the Web Edition, Edit › Save as stamp and its command palette entry are greyed out instead of doing nothing: saving stamps is a Desktop feature for now.
- On Desktop, a link such as a map credit opens in your browser (or your mail app for an email address) instead of replacing Canopi's window with the web page.
- The Linux packages now start on Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12: earlier .deb and AppImage packages needed a newer system library (glibc 2.39) than those distributions have.
Security
Canopi Desktop moves to Tauri 2.12.4 with its dialog, single-instance and opener plugins, closing the Tauri advisories GHSA-7gmj-67g7-phm9 (CVE-2026-42184) and GHSA-w28w-mhc8-qvjv. Both concern who may call into the app: a remote page treated as local on Windows, and another webview reading the app's messages. The update also moves Tauri's asset protocol, which serves Canopi's display copies of your site data and its cached plant images, onto a handler that no longer blocks the app while it reads. The app window now only ever shows Canopi itself: web links, email links and any other address open outside it or not at all.
Before you upgrade
Installing 2.0.2 over 2.0.0 or 2.0.1 keeps your Designs, Drafts, Data library and settings.

Canopi 2.0.1
Canopi 2.0.1
A small update to Canopi 2.0 for Desktop and the Web Edition.
Fixed
- Measurement guides rotate: select a guide, alone or with plants, zones and notes, and turn it with the rotation handle or Rotate… (Ctrl Alt R). Both ends turn about the selection's centre. A single plant still has no rotation handle, since plant symbols stay upright.
Changed
- Canopi Desktop's Plant catalog now comes from the same plant data as the Web Edition, the export of 26 September 2026.
- The Web Edition at web.projectcanopi.com is updated with every release, starting with this one.

Canopi 2.0.0
Canopi 2.0.0
Canopi 2 makes the map the canvas. Every Design is drawn over a basemap, satellite imagery or your terrain data, and every object is stored where it is on Earth. Pan, zoom, turning the map and search move only the view. Desktop and Web share the canvas, panels, stories and PDF export; Desktop adds the full Plant catalog, the Data library and the Design notebook.
What's new
Moving around the map
- The map turns: Shift with right- or middle-drag (add Ctrl/Cmd for 15° steps), Shift ← and →, a trackpad or two-finger twist, or the compass's ring. N, Shift N or a click on the compass resets north; right-click a zone's edge for "Turn view to this edge". Plants, names and handles stay upright; notes, the grid and guides turn with the map.
- Right-drag, middle-drag or Space-drag pans in every tool; a still right-click opens the menu. Pinch and Ctrl + wheel zoom. Settings › Canvas › Pointing device chooses Mouse (the wheel zooms) or Trackpad (two fingers pan). The Pan tool (H) moved to the View menu.
- The map's controls sit in one group at the bottom right: scale bar, zoom out, the map scale (a menu of common scales), zoom in, Fit to Design, Show my location (Web) and the compass. Home or Ctrl 0 fits the Design.
- Touch: one finger selects or draws, two fingers pan, pinch and turn, a press and hold opens the menu. Handles grow to finger size after a touch. Help › Keyboard shortcuts (F1) lists the keys, mouse, pen and touch gestures.
- Show my location (Web Edition, on phones, tablets and computers) shows where you are and follows you; if the browser blocks it, the button says why. Your location is never saved in a Design or an export, and closing the Design turns it off.
- Reopening a Design returns to the view it was saved with; a Design appears once its map is drawn.
- Zoomed far out, the Design is a pin; a tool, a click on the pin or a dropped plant brings it back.
Designing on the map
- A new Design opens with "Where is your site?": search a place or type coordinates and the map flies there. Fit to Design frames what the title bar, rails and panel leave.
- Backgrounds: OpenFreeMap styles (Liberty, Positron, Bright, Dark) labelled in your language, satellite imagery (free, or your Google Maps key kept on this device), or None; contour lines and hillshading are one switch away. If the map or Satellite with your key can't load, a notice says so with Retry; saving a corrected key in Settings › Map and imagery brings the imagery back.
- Every tool shows a card beside the tool rail with what to do next and its keys. Place plants previews the plant with its mature width and the distance to its nearest neighbour; Place a stamp previews its zones as placed and turns with [ and ].
- Tooltips and the inspection lens, now with a centre crosshair, draw above every panel.
- Plant a row follows a curved path: from a placed plant, click bend points (Alt: a sharp corner; the first point closes a loop). Drag a point to move it, drag or double-click a dot to insert one, Alt-click or Delete removes one. Choose an Interval or N plants; Enter, a double-click or the check button plants ordinary plants, left selected.
- Right-click or long press a zone corner or a row's point for Delete point, Sharp corner or Smooth corner; drag a zone's midpoint dot to insert a corner. While drawing a row, polygon or profile, Esc, Backspace or Ctrl Z removes the last point; a double-click or Finish shape ends a polygon.
- The selection toolbar is gone: right-click an object (or press the Menu key) for one menu in plain words (Cut, Copy, Paste, Duplicate, Select all of this species, Arrange, Save as stamp, Lock, Rotate…, Species details and more). The Edit menu and the palette enable the same commands, except Paste, which they keep on even with nothing to paste.
- A chip at the bottom of the map names the selection (counts, spacing, a zone's area and perimeter). Zones can be named; an unnamed one is called by shape and size. Click a zone's outline to select it; a click inside picks what is beneath.
- Rotate by a typed angle or in 15° steps; arrow keys nudge along the screen (10 cm, or 1 m with Ctrl/Cmd; with nothing selected they pan). Lock and unlock objects, or Unlock all; on a selection mixing both, Delete, Cut, Copy, Duplicate, Arrange and Lock act on the unlocked ones, while Group and Rotate need all unlocked. Shift keeps drawn edges on 45° to the screen.
- Plant symbols were redrawn: 33 one-colour symbols in four families, legible at small sizes. They grow as you zoom in, never touching a neighbour, and show their detailed drawing up close.
- Plants in this Design › Display on the map colours plants by species, stratum or one colour, sets symbol size and outline, and labels codes or names (Shift L). Soften background dims busy imagery.
Finding and placing plants
- The Plant catalog opens on recommended species (edible and multi-use first) and sorts by Name, Height or Edibility; quick filters sit under the search, the rest behind Filters as removable tokens.
- Species details lead with key facts (form, stratum, height, hardiness, light, soil, moisture, growth, uses). Photos name their source and licence. A species in your Design shows its code and count, with Select them and Zoom to them.
- Every plant list has the same finder (Ctrl F): names in every language, scientific names and codes, ignoring accents, capitals and small typos. Selected on map, Stratum and Form narrow any list; matches are ringed on the map.
- Place plants works before you pick a species: its card offers the Design's species, your Favorites, recent picks, a search and the full catalog. Drag a plant from the catalog or Favorites onto the map.
- A species with no name in your language shows its English name marked "(en)".
Layers, data and analyses
- Layers lists the Design's layers, one Site data row whose eye shows or hides your terrain data, and Map: contour lines, hillshading and Background.
- Site data (Desktop, Ctrl 2) lists your terrain and height data, results under their source, in an order you drag. Rows show the value under the pointer; a click pins a point. Terrain, surface and height data draw as grey shaded relief lit from the northwest, like IGN's maps, each zoom level shaded from its own detail; Colours is the other choice. Colours, range and opacity are saved with the Design; terrain types use your language's acronyms (MNT, DGM…).
- Profile charts each visible elevation or height layer along a line you draw: rise, steepest slope, Copy values. A layer whose values cannot be read says so on the chart, with Retry.
- File › Import terrain or height data… takes single-band GeoTIFFs up to 2 GiB (such as IGN LiDAR HD) and places national grids (Lambert-93, Dutch, UK, Belgian, Swiss and others) where they belong; another coordinate system is refused in the dialog, naming it, in your language. It runs while you work; Cancel leaves nothing, a failure offers Retry.
- The Data library, opened from Site data or the File menu, keeps imported data on this computer for all Designs. Remove from Design never deletes data; Delete everywhere does, and frees its disk space unless another item uses the same file.
- Analyze… calculates Slope (degrees or percent); Details show its source, whether it is out of date (Refresh) and Run again with changes.
Planning panels
- Calendar: Range, One day or Unscheduled, a Completed switch, multi-line notes, and your language's first weekday. Add to calendar… creates an action for the selected plants or a zone.
- Budget: Set unit cost… from the right-click menu; Selected on map narrows the list; File › Export saves a CSV.
- Consortium assigns each species a stratum (Emergent, High, Mid, Low) and succession phases; the map's stratum colours and the Stratum filter follow it.
Saved views, stories and printing
- View › Save current view… keeps where the map looks, its angle, background, layers, plant labels and focused species, with a picture; going to one moves only the camera and shows the same area in any window.
- The Stories panel builds a story from views: each step has a title, rich text and pictures (up to 1 MB each, 10 MB per Design). Present shows it full-window on desktop, web and phones beside the live map, with keys and swiping; presenting never changes the Design.
- File › Export › Planting plan (PDF)… opens a side sheet beside a live preview: paper, Map orientation (North up or As on screen), what to include, plant colours, field sheets and page thumbnails. Split into readable sheets cuts a page that would print too small; reference numbers match on every page.
- The plant key is grouped by habit, and Find in key (Ctrl F) rings a species' entry.
Saving, settings and start
- Canopi saves a moment after every change and when you switch away or close. A new Design is a Draft until you Save as… a file. You are asked only when a save fails or the file changed outside Canopi; Revert to the version when opened… undoes a session.
- The Start screen shows Recent Designs with a sketch and counts, and your Drafts. A file that moved, was made by another version or is damaged says so. On short windows and landscape phones it scrolls as one page.
- Settings has Appearance, Map and imagery, Canvas, New Designs, Keyboard (single-key shortcuts can be turned off), Files and data and About. If the map stops drawing, Retry brings it back without losing the view, selection or Undo.
- Help › Command palette… (Ctrl Shift P) runs any command by name. F6 moves between title bar, tools, map and panel; screen readers announce tools and the map. On macOS shortcuts read Cmd.
Web and phones
- The Web Edition keeps Designs in the browser (Download a copy to keep a file), imports and exports GeoJSON, exports PDF and Budget CSV, and presents stories.
- On phones the map fills the screen under a slim bar (Menu, Design name, Undo, place search); Select, Pan, Place plants and Polygon zone sit on a strip, ...
Canopi 1.2.0
Canopi 1.2.0 Release Notes
Planning In The Workspace
- Plan seasonal work in a full Calendar panel with month navigation, dated tasks and focused keyboard editing.
- Review quantities and costs in the Budget panel, including currency-aware totals and a downloadable CSV in the Web Edition.
- Build and inspect plant guilds in the Consortium panel while keeping the canvas visible.

Canopi 1.1.1
Canopi 1.1.1 Release Notes
Clearer Field Prints
- Identify plants through their symbols and colours when those appearances are unique. Ambiguous plants use simple enclosures or existing Species Codes, with fewer labels and no connecting plant lines.
- Keep complete, compact plant keys beside or below the detailed drawing when space permits. Additional key pages appear only when needed, and detail numbers stay consecutive.
- Read zone dimensions and stored measurement guides on the overview and detailed sheets. Transparent zone interiors keep overlapping zones, plants and annotations visible and reduce printing ink.
- Print contextual annotations where they fit. Crowded notes use the selected detail's key; notes outside selected details no longer create unexpected extra pages.
- Preserve every edge of irregular four-sided zones when deriving dimensions.
Reliability And Maintenance
- Update frontend dependencies to resolve reported security issues, including MapLibre attribution sanitization.
- Make Design Notebook row moves atomic and keep document-replacement retries tied to the current session.
- Improve ownership and cleanup of panel-reordering gestures, Species Catalog refreshes and retained canvas presentation.
- Remove the superseded PDF bracket and routing implementation, expand regression coverage and keep Desktop and Web Edition print layouts aligned.
- Bind release promotion to the exact verified candidate commit and prevent accidental replacement of published releases.

Canopi 1.0.1
Canopi Desktop 1.0.1 Release Notes
Release date: 2026-08-21
Fixes And Reliability
- Fixed pinned plant names drifting away from their plants after zooming or panning on high-DPI and fractional-scale displays. The same correction keeps Canvas2D selection labels, annotations, measurements, and stack badges aligned on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Made application and canvas labels update immediately when the interface language changes.
- Hardened document persistence, document switching, and Design Template imports so older asynchronous work cannot replace a newer user choice or save a stale Design snapshot.
- Improved desktop and Web Edition Species Search consistency for localized names, Unicode matching, short queries, result ordering, paging, and cancellation.
- Reduced UI stalls and concurrency races by bounding native background work and making user-data database initialization atomic.
