For the bot thing, maybe it's because people haven't made the bots. You can't blame the Stoat devs for the bot situation, since any user could make a bot. How about instead of saying that, you go ahead and make one yourself if you're so mad about it? Also, yes, the calls are unreliable. V2 just released. They are getting thousands of users every single day. For a small server like theirs, it is not easy to be fully stable. Of course there are going to be random disconnects, and they are working on expanding servers but since you don't have any backend experience, you have zero clue how hard it is to expand servers while users are actively using it. I do, it takes months to even years. And screen sharing and camera do exist. You can enable them in self host. The reason why it doesn't on the main host is because they still have to expand their servers to be able to handle that and all the users. Of course Revolt has been around for years but not the new UI, not V2 calling. and not stoat, And for the bots that's on users, not the devs of Stoat. (I am aware i mentioned bots 2 times. i know) And honestly, this in your comment: "quality—though" makes me think this entire thing was written by AI, which I wouldn't be shocked about. |

Most of what you're wondering about is either in progress or intentionally disabled (presence updates specifically). As for your point on missing bots/tooling, that's simply a matter of adoption. Bots are not first party (nor are they elsewhere), if you use a bot on another platform, perhaps convince them to adopt stoat.
We are volunteers. We work on this project in our spare time, outside of work and/or school hours. There is absolutely polish missing, and if you'd like to contribute that polish, we'd welcome it. But we can't spend our time working on the missing features you're referencing while also making everything polished. We don't work magic, just machines. |

It’s honestly kind of shocking how many basic features Stoat is still missing, especially considering it’s supposed to be a chat platform first and foremost.
Things like a simple notification sound—arguably one of the most fundamental parts of any messaging app—just isn’t there, which makes it easy to miss messages unless you’re constantly watching the app. Even basic presence features feel unreliable—whether it’s the backend or the app itself, online statuses don’t always update correctly, leaving you guessing whether someone is actually online or not, sometimes even requiring a full reset of the app to properly update them.
On top of that, voice and call features feel underdeveloped, lacking things like reliable screen sharing or more stable call quality—though to be fair, it has at least been hinted that improvements in this area are coming. There are also performance issues, where the app can slow down or struggle when more users are active, disconnects mid-call are frequent, which doesn’t inspire much confidence in its scalability.
Beyond that, the overall feature set feels incomplete, with missing or half-implemented systems compared to what users have come to expect. The ecosystem is also pretty barebones, with fewer bots, integrations, and moderation tools available, making it harder to manage or customize communities.
At this point, it’s hard not to question the direction of development. This platform has been around in one form or another for quite a while, and yet many of these basic features are still missing. When things this fundamental remain unaddressed for so long, it starts to give the impression that polish and user experience just aren’t being prioritized the way they should be.
