Support is_dst indicators in tz_localize #7963

The indicators are useful for assigning the correct offset when there are ambiguous transition times

so

dr = date_range(datetime(2011, 11, 6, 0), periods=5,

these should both work (accept a list-like, use com.is_list_like to detect), then convert to a ndarray (you may need to do in a try-except in case its non-convertible)

dr.tz_localize('US/Eastern',is_dst=True)
dr.tz_localize('US/Eastern',is_dst=[1,1,0,0,0])

also if is_dst is not None and infer_dst is True that should raise (ambiguous options)

I misunderstood. Right now [1,1,0,0,0] or [True,True,False,False,False] are what are supported. I'd almost rather have it be explicit. If the times aren't ambiguous then is_dst doesn't really do anything.

is_dst and infer_dst does raise. I didn't add a test, though.

hmm, ok then so passing a single boolean is meaning-less (then default it to None and make it an error if its not-list like then).

and make the doc-string clear (for both this and infer_dst)

are you sure that its not better to simply make this one option?

e.g.

infer_dst=True/False/boolean-list-like ?

I do default to None and if the length is not the same as the passed values it errors.

I guess we could put it in infer, although one really isn't inferring at that point, but I don't know if it is worth the extra argument.

easy, deprecate infer_dst on the public methods (we are going to completely eliminate on the low-level stuff), see https://github.com/pydata/pandas/blob/master/pandas/core/frame.py#L2575.

Then add the new kw. You could need to process the old keyword if it has a value passed and translate to the new kw. (do this at the very top-level of the functions). Then simply pass the new kw to the lower level stuff and do your thing.

some remarks:

  • Is this API break necessary? As far as I understand, you want to add new functionality that does not really fit under the existing keyword infer_dst? But you could also add a second keyword to not break the API?
  • The way you implemented it now seems backwards incompatible (not just deprecating), as True/False (the previous options for infer_dst) are not valid options anymore? So it's not only changing the keyword name, but also the values. The values True/False should at least also be deprecated first, not just removed I think.
  • About the new keyword name ambiguous, this name seems a bit 'ambiguous' to me .. :-) Just joking, but to say that something like infer_dst and is_dst is much more explicit that it is about the handling of DST ambiguities, so I personally like something like that more.

Furthermore, you said you still have to update the docs, but two ideas for that: I would provide some examples in the docstring to make the different options of the new kwarg more clear. And the DST handling can maybe also be promoted to it's own subsection within 'Time Zone Handling' in timeseries.rst.

-Two people both suggested the change and it seems to make sense. The two keyword arguments refer to the same thing and are mutually exclusive so it makes sense to move it into one.
-The old method of True/False still works, it's just not documented as it doesn't make sense under the new construct. Nevertheless, all old code will work and it's explicitly tested for.
-I think in the context of tz_localize, ambiguous makes sense. Both infer_dst and is_dst are very specific to instances of how to treat ambiguous times. I was originally going to go with is_dst, but @ischwabacher suggested the change and I went with it (see the issue for a more thorough description). I like it for now and I spent enough time futzing with it already.

I think this is a pretty speciality case but is useful for those who need it (and doesn't impact others)

is th NaT argument a string? (I think it should be for consistency but 'nat' is clear I think)

Three things:
* I think the option to raise should be raise, rather than None
* I think the default should be True (which broadcasts to the bool-ndarray case) instead of raise-- raising on a vectorized operation seems bad when the rest of the array is valid.
* I feel like the bool-ndarray doc could be more clear. Something like this: "-bool-ndarray is an array of flags indicating whether to take the first (True) or last (False) of the possible localizations. If the ambiguity is a 'fall back' DST transition, this flag will be True for DST and False for standard time."

This is a change from how it works now. True is translated into 'infer' (which I think is what you are intending by your comments). Do we want that to be the default as it's a change as it currently raises an Exception? I would almost rather leave it as an exception as users need to watch and understand how their data is being translated across transitions. These nuances are easily missed and mishandled by users.

the default should not change (if you want to propose that, that's a separate issue).

so since infer_dst=False is currently the default, then abmiguous=None (or equivalent) should be the default. I agree that a user will have to explicity set this

Hmm... I would expect with this API that True be broadcast to mean effectively is_dst=True. So you could do this:

We should probably have a kwarg for handling nonexistent times, too, since there are multiple options for them; we could take the offset before the discontinuity and yield a time after the discontinuity, or vice versa, or we could just return the time at the boundary, or we could return NaT, or we could raise. Or, come to that, we could return a non-normalized time so that date_range could agree with incrementally adding to a time, but that seems horrible.

I didn't think about the fact that raise is the current default behavior; I agree that changing that is a separate decision.

Passing ambiguous in your example does nothing as there are no duplicate hours (you need to have duplicate 1:00, 1:00 for it to do anything). True is just 'infer' (although it's merely there to support the old argument when 'infer_dst' was a bool). Further, the bool-ndarray only applies to the transition hours, not any times that tz_localize will handle appropriately otherwise. The ambiguous logic only comes into effect when the times are ambiguous.

But the second time in the range is ambiguous. 'infer' won't help because it's not duplicated (we don't want it to be duplicated), but adding ambiguous=True does nothing for the other 24 times and only specifies that we should resolve the one ambiguous time to its first occurrence. Then t.hour is constant between successive elements of Out[3], which is an unintuitive behavior for most purposes but was the behavior I needed for the project that got me using pandas in the first place. This is another reason why is_dst is misleading: most of the times aren't in DST, but we don't care because we don't want any ambiguous times to resolve in standard time.

If we want True to mean 'infer', maybe we should just deprecate infer_dst rather than removing it, and have it set ambiguous='infer'.

infer_dst is deprecated and in the code ambiguous=True is set to 'infer' (check tslib.pyx) in my commit.

'infer' or True will not work in your example. If you pass in the bool-array you will get the behavior you expect. 'infer' only works when there are two ambiguous times, but less or more than that you need to explicitly tell it through the array.

@rockg What @ischwabacher means (I think), is to only deprecate infer_dst and not to replace it by ambiguous. So for now keep both as seperate options, but deprecate infer_dst pointing users of infer_dst=True to ambiguous='infer'.
This way True/False can be used for other things (eg the behaviour @ischwabacher describes which is in line with the behaviour of is_dst I think?) because it does not have to be the same as 'infer'.

I used the deprecate_kwarg decorate which replaces infer_dst with ambiguous behind the scenes. So it's only deprecated. I think we should be able to add a message to the deprecate_kwarg decorator to the effect of "the meaning of True may change in future versions, change to ambiguous='infer'". I'm not in favor of adding infer_dst back to the function calls.

remapping deprecated keyword arguments.  For example, in pandas-dev#7963, which inspired
this PR, one could write this:

```

Tests of this functionality are added to `pandas/tests/test_util.py`, created
for this purpose; the `if __name__ == '__main__'` section is cribbed directly
from `test_index.py`.

Some other things:

  1. I think I also raised this in another PR, but is it needed to add dayfirst/yearfirst to the DatetimeIndex constructor? (@rockg I know you only added it to the signature/docstring, as it already worked, but this is making it visible). For me, this is functionality that belongs to to_datetime and only clutters DatetimeIndex (BTW, yearfirst isn't even available in to_datetime).
    I would keep to_datetime as the string parser with all bells and whistles, and let DatetimeIndex do only default parsing (because otherwise, why not adding adding other to_datetime keywords like format and unit?)
  2. The same a little bit with ambiguous (and tz) in the DatetimeIndex. What's its use? I suppose to do idx = pd.DatetimeIndex(...); idx = idx.tz_localize(..., ambiguous=..) in one step? But I want to note that this is nowhere mentioned in the docs/whatsnew and also nowhere tested for.
    Again, isn't this more something for to_datetime (if we want the ability to do it in one step).
  3. How to handle non-DST-related ambiguities? Because now the explanation of the bool-array says True/False is for DST/non-DST. Is this equivalent to first and second possible time? If so, maybe mention that?
  4. Should just True/False also be an argument to ambiguous? Indicating 'all first' or 'all second' (or all DST / all non-DST) This would be equivalent with is_dst=True/False of pytz on each individual time? And this would then also be consistent with such an argument on Timestamp.tz_localize

  1. I didn't see the point of having things in kwargs that are not specifically in the function arguments. I can put it back to the way it was.
  2. Yes, it's use is to do it in one step. This to me is the same as tz. I'd prefer to add a test and leave it as is.
  3. I don't know what you mean non-DST-related ambiguities. These aren't ambiguous from a DST perspective so these flags will have no bearing. The only hours these matter for are the two that have the same time but different offsets. It is not equivalent to first and second time, that is what infer is for. I think this is adequately discussed in the documentation.
  4. See above for discussion on True/False. It only makes sense for a Timestamp which is already supported otherwise you need an array to be explicit. I don't see the difficulty in always being explicit with the dst/non-dst of time and forcing to be an array is the best way to do that. In this context it does make sense to have is_dst rather than ambiguous. At this point I don't really care what the name is. is_dst='raise' and is_dst='NaT' doesn't make much and are more appropriate with ambiguous. Choose your poison I guess.

Related to 3) and 4), bare with my ignorance, but I don't fully follow (and I also don't get it from the docs). See the comments of @ischwabacher #7963 (comment) and #7943 (comment). I understand from those that, if there is a DST transition that leads to ambiguous times (a fall transition), that DST is always the first of possible ambiguous times, and non-DST the second. Or is this not correct? I do not mean the first and second occurence in your values, I mean the first/last of the possible times that this ambiguous time could be.
For the single True/False keyword, see this as just a broadcast to the bool array case. So the docstring could be 'bool or array-like of bools'. So ambiguous=True would do the same as [True, True, .., True]. This would be equivalent as performing Timestamp.tz_localize(.. ambiguous=True) on each individual value of your time series.
What I mean with non-DST ambiguities, is what I thought I had understood from this discussion, that not all ambiguities are related to DST transitions?

Yes, when resolving any group of ambiguous times, the first is always DST and the second is non-DST. The example in the doc shows that these are how times get resolved. I'm not sure I follow what additional information needs to be added.

I understand that it's a broadcast, but I would prefer to leave it as is. These are advanced tz operations and I think it's worth asking the user to exactly specify each timestamp so that they are thinking about the details involved. It might be worth saving True/False for some other ambiguous operation in the future as you alluded to a few weeks ago.

All ambiguities that I think 99.999% of people work with are DST ambiguities. I still don't have a good example where that's not the case (I know the example early on in Warsaw in 1915, but we almost certainly don't need to be concerned about that after all who is working with hourly/sub-hourly data for 1915).

@jreback do you mean the error? I think it is supposed to error yes, as 'raise' is the default. But maybe we should put a comment to make this clear (that the user does not think it is an error in the docs)

Is there a better way to show the values of a DatetimeIndex? Because now there is:

    Switch default colormap for scatterplot to 'Greys'

    In #7780, I added colormap support to scatter, but choose to override the
    default rainbow colormap (7780#issuecomment-49533995).

    I'm now regreting choosing 'RdBu' as the default colormap. I think a simple
    black-white colormap is a more conservative and better default choice for
    coloring scatter plots -- binary colormaps really only make sense if the data
    is signed. 'Greys' is also the default colormap set by the seaborn package,
    and @mwaskom has done far more thinking about colormaps than I have.

    If possible, I would love to get this in before 0.15 is released, so we don't
    have to worry about changing how anyone's plots look.

    More flexible describe() via include/exclude type filtering

    This enhance describe()'s output via new include/exclude list arguments,
    letting the user specify the dtypes to be summarized as output.
    This provides an simple way to overcome the automatic type-filtering done
    by default; it's also convenient with groupby().

    ENH: Introduce methods for each change to Categorical.categories

    There are multiple "actions" which can be done to categories:

    - add one or more categories
    - remove one or more categories
    - rename the categories
    - reorder the categories
    - remove unused categories

    Each of these actions now gets it's own method together with a special
    `set_categories`, which can do more than one action in one call, which is
    needed to save computation time.

    API: rename Categorical.levels to .categories

    The name 'levels' was already used by a much different concept in
    MultiIndex and this was too confusing, so change the name to
    'categories'. Add deprecation warning if the old name is used
    (in constructor or the public 'levels' attribute). The old name
    'levels' is not anymore exposed unter Series.cat as it was never
    part of a stable release.

    This rename was done by search&replace in categorical.py and the
    corresponding tests_categorical.py, implementing the deprecation
    accessor (with a temporary 'raise Exception') and then run the the
    unittests and change code until all tests pass.

    API: remove compat keyword in Categorical constructor

    Before the new Categorical work, the default two argument constructor
    was expecting "codes and levels" but this was changed to
    "values and levels" and a 'compat' kwarg was added, which could
    be used to switch to the old style constructor useage.

    It was decided that we switch to the new style constructor useage as
    the new default (compat=False) and implement a 'from_codes(...)'
    constructor.

    As the compat codepath is now never triggered and code should be
    changed to use the new 'from_codes()' constructor, remove the old
    codepath.

    Add some warnings if we are pretty sure that the old style
    constructor is meant, but unfortunately we don't catch all cases.

    FIX: Implement small Categorical fixups

    This is a squashed commit which adresses several small issues
    identified in the latest code review.

    * As per dicussion in https://github.com/pydata/pandas/issues/8074,
      Categorical.unique() should return an array and not a Index object
      to make is consistant with other unique() implementations.

    * Mark a few more categorical methods as internal

    * Change reorder_levels and drop_unused_levels to inplace=False. As per
      the discussion in #8074, change the default of both methods
      to return a copy and only do the change inplace if told otherwise.

    * Make str(cat) more array like. As Categorical is more like
      np.ndarray and less similar to pd.Series, change the string
      representation of Categorical to be more like np.ndarray.

      The new str(cat) will only show at max 10 values.

      Also remove the "Categorical(" in front of an empty categorical
      -> either that's put in front of every str(cta) or none. It also missed
      the final ")".

    * Test more nan handling in Categorical

    * Add a testcase for groupby with two columns and unused categories

      During the devleopment of pandas new Categorical support, groupby
      with two columns (one worked) didn't include empty categories which
      omits rows with NaN. Add a testcase so this is checked.

      No codechanges nessesary, this bug was fixed at some other places
      before. See #8138 for more details.
