Release list
Viewer 2.8.88.2
Viewer-only build of the fork, based on TightVNC 2.8.88.
What's in it
- New in this release: a
-titleprefix=TEXTcommand-line option. It puts your own
text at the front of the window title, ahead of the remote name, so the title
readsLobby Display 3 - WINPC01 - TightVNC Viewer. Useful when several viewer
windows are open and the taskbar shows only machine names. - The File Transfer dialog remembers the last local and remote folder for each host.
- Places: named shortcuts to folders, on buttons above each path box. A remote
place can list several candidate paths and lands on the first one that exists. - A gear button holds options to skip the upload and download confirmations, and
to name file patterns that overwrite without asking.
Install
Unzip and run tvnviewer.exe. There is no installer.
The exe is unsigned, so SmartScreen will warn you the first time. Verify the hash
below if you want to check the download.

Viewer 2.8.88.1
Viewer-only build of the fork, based on TightVNC 2.8.88. This is the first release under the fork's own version number.
What's in it
Three additions, all in the viewer's File Transfer dialog.
- The dialog remembers the last local and remote folder for each host.
- Places: named shortcuts to folders, on buttons above each path box. A remote place can list several candidate paths and lands on the first one that exists, so one name reaches the same logical folder across machines that lay it out differently. Edit Places sits behind the arrow button at the end of the row, and the order you set there decides which four get buttons.
- A gear button holds options to skip the upload and download confirmations, and to name file patterns that overwrite without asking.
The remote access and control code is untouched.
Install
Unzip and run tvnviewer.exe. There is no installer, no redistributable, and nothing to register.
To replace an existing install, close the viewer and copy the exe over C:\Program Files\TightVNC\tvnviewer.exe. Your Start Menu shortcut and .vnc file association both point at that path, so they keep working. Rename the original first if you want a way back.
Settings live in HKCU\Software\TightVNC\Viewer, the same keys stock TightVNC uses. Your connection history carries over, and so does anything you change here if you go back.
This is the viewer only. Keep using the stock TightVNC server, which the fork does not change.
The exe is unsigned, so SmartScreen warns you the first time. Click "More info", then "Run anyway". Check the hash below if you want to be sure of the download.
