Piconet 0.5.4

@deep40k deep40k released this 31 Oct 06:12

The server moved to a new address. Everyone must update to race; the launcher updates itself.

The launcher now says Official Server.

  • Fixed a cause of desyncs: a boost press could be lost when several of a player's inputs arrived together.
  • Everyone must update to race.

Quick Play

  • Quick Play lobbies start on a countdown once two players are in: 60 seconds with two, shorter with each player who
joins, down to 10 seconds with one seat left. A full lobby still starts at once, and a start vote of more than half
still starts it straight away. The time left shows beside the lobby's steps. Custom lobbies start as before, by
    their host or their vote.
  • Every 0.5 build finds the same lobbies: the server groups players by version line, not by exact build.

Game

  • After you finish, your camera shows its finish shots once (about 12 seconds), then you watch the race as a
knocked-out racer does: the leader still racing first, the same buttons.
  • The results move on by themselves, as if you pressed A: your own results page after 15 seconds, then the page
with every racer 30 seconds after it opens.
  • Replays are about a tenth of their old size: a race of three minutes is some 30 KB instead of 300 KB. A replay
from this build needs this build or a later one to play; replays of every earlier build still play.

Launcher

  • Replays are grouped by date: Today, Yesterday, Earlier this week, Last week, Earlier this month, then each month.
The page opens at once with thousands of replays, and its scroll bar is always there to grab.
  • The Replays page lists and plays the new, smaller replays.
  • The race view says of a player who has finished whether their game is still open or they are back in the lobby.
  • The portable zip is back beside the installer on each release: unzip it and run, with your data kept beside it.
  • Custom lobbies: the Garage and your machine choice now follow the lobby's own machine setting. A lobby set to 0
showed 100, and in a lobby of "your own setting" or a range everyone's choice was sent as 100.
  • Settings, Launcher: "Controller navigation", off by default. With it off, a controller does nothing to the
launcher's pages; setting buttons on the Controller page still works.
  • A custom lobby's "All rules" closes when you go to another page.
  • The notices list closes when you click outside it, press Escape or change pages.
  • Replays: "•••" stays open on one row at a time, and deleting a replay keeps the other rows as they were.
  • Enter joins from a locked lobby's password box, which now has the cursor when it appears.
  • Practice runs show as "Practice" in Quick Play's recent races.
  • Smaller fixes: drop-down text centred, labels lined up with their controls, the Garage's empty-shelf note no longer
behind the New machine tile, ranges read "80 to 100", long course names wrap, roomier Stats rows, table headings in
    the same capitals everywhere.

Game

  • Smaller replays. A replay is still written step by step while the race runs, so a game that stops on the way
leaves a whole replay of what was raced. When the race or the practice ends, the game rewrites it in the new,
compact form: the same race, the same inputs, nothing a race computes changes. Over 135 replays of one player's
folder the average went from 296 KB to 32 KB. A launcher or game from before this build says such a replay is "of
    another version of the game".
  • A replay checks its results too. Playing a replay compares, as before, the race at every step with the
recording, and now also the finish order and times at the race's end with those the replay holds; a difference is
said in the game's log like a step that differs. Replays from before 0.4.0 are not judged by their results, since
some of them recorded results from a moment that was not the race's end.
