Creating queries

Queries used to identify new references must be written in Lucene query syntax.

To get started, review the available examples and test your queries using the online version of the Destiny search interface. Ask the DESTINY repoistory team for credentials. Open the Search section from the navigation bar at the top of the page to enter and refine your query.

A comprehensive overview of the supported Lucene query syntax is available here. Although the search functionality covers most common use cases, it has some limitations. In particular, proximity searches are only supported for individual terms and not for multi-word phrases.

For example, the query "climate change"~3 is valid and returns documents where climate and change occur within three positions of each other. However, proximity searches between phrases are not supported. Queries such as ("carbon capture" "direct air capture")~10, which would search for the two phrases occurring within ten positions of each other, cannot be executed.

Some additional query examples:

  • ("climate change"~3 AND (health OR "air pollution")) AND publication_year: >=2015 This query retrieves publications from after 2014 that contain in abstract or title the terms climate and change within three positions of each other, as well as either the term health or the exact phrase air pollution.

Existing Dimensions queries can often be reused but may require adaptation to Lucene syntax.
