How do I make it work with GMail?

Enter the following information in the account window:

Account type: IMAP
Account name: <choose a meaningful name>
User: <your name>@gmail.com
Password: <your password>
Server: imap.gmail.com
Port: <leave blank>
Folders: <leave blank>
[x] Enable Push-IMAP
[x] Enable SSL

Important: If you have enabled the 2-step verification on your google account, you MUST generate an application-specific password and use it in the config above, instead of your real password.

Where do I specify my email client?

Clicking a mail notification popup will open the default mail client specified in System Settings -> System Info -> Default Applications.
If you're a webmail (e.g. gmail) user and want your account to be launched in a browser, please install a tool like gnome-gmail.

Can I haz a permanently visible notification counter in ma top panel?

Yes you can. Just install this (GNOME-Shell) or this (Ubuntu Unity) extension.

What's the purpose of the "Mark as read" button?

The "Mark as read" button marks the selected email as "read", where "read" means "read by mailnag" (not by your email client). Mailnag does not notify you again about emails that are marked as read, even after a reboot.
