It should definitely be unstable API. Exposing an internal function like this might be OK as an emergency change in 3.14 only -- that's up to @hugovk. But I wouldn't merge to main if it's not backported to 3.14. |

This is too late for 3.14.0, especially as it also affects 3.12. |
