Simpler and more reliable.

  • Open TV Display on the TV and you're connected. The Mac keeps looking for your TV and connects about 2 seconds after you open the app. While it's closed, the Mac's menu says "Open TV Display on ".
  • No more background service on the TV. Version 1.1 kept a listener running all the time and switched the TV over by itself. That's gone: TV Display now only listens while it's open, and needs only the internet permission.
  • Recovers in seconds when the TV goes away. If the TV restarts or drops off Wi-Fi, the Mac notices within a few seconds (it used to take about 3 minutes) and reconnects as soon as TV Display is open again.

Still included from 1.1: the Mac finds your TV by name (no IP addresses) and has a Text Size option (Normal, Larger, Largest).

Updating: install the new APK over the old one (same signing key), and replace the Mac app in Applications.

No more IP addresses, no more adb.

  • Finds your TV by itself. The TV announces itself on your network, and the Mac's menu lists it by name under TV. On first run it connects without asking, and it follows the TV if its address changes. Typing an address is still there as a fallback.
  • The TV switches to TV Display on its own. The TV app now waits in the background, including after the TV restarts, and comes to the front when your Mac connects. If you leave it with Back while the Mac is streaming, it stays closed. The Mac app no longer uses adb.
  • Text Size in the menu: Normal, Larger or Largest. Things on the TV get bigger and stay sharp, which makes a real difference from across the room. It switches instantly.

Speed is unchanged: about 60 fps and 62 ms from the Mac to the TV.

Updating: install the new APK over the old one (same signing key), and open TV Display on the TV once. On the Mac, replace the app in Applications. The first time, macOS asks to let TV Display find devices on your local network; allow it.

First release.

  • Mac (TV-Display.dmg): menu-bar app for macOS 14+, Apple silicon and Intel. Adds a 1280×720 display and streams it to the TV. Sound can play on the Mac or the TV (macOS 14.2+).
  • TV (TV-Display.apk): receiver for Android TV / Google TV 9+, 97 KB.

Measured on a TCL Android TV (Realtek RTD284x) over home Wi-Fi: ~55 fps, 63–70 ms from capture on the Mac to decoded on the TV.

The Mac app isn't notarized. On first launch click Done, then System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. See the README for install steps.
