What's New

A big release: a new video player in the dashboard with closed captions, custom sources that read files from your server, channels that stay on in Jellyfin and Plex while they wait, and a long list of playback and reliability fixes.

New

  • A new video player in the dashboard. It has its own controls, the same in every browser: what's on across the top, a timeline you can skip back and forth through what's buffered, a LIVE button that shows how far behind live you are, volume, picture-in-picture and fullscreen. Keyboard: Space or K to play and pause, ← → to skip 10 seconds, ↑ ↓ for volume, M to mute, C for captions, F for fullscreen, P for picture-in-picture, End to jump to live.
  • Closed captions. Channels that carry captions can show them in the dashboard player: turn them on from the CC button (CC1 is the usual choice). They start off on every channel.
  • Custom sources can read files from your data folder. Put a playlist in the custom-m3u folder or an XMLTV guide in the custom-epg folder of your data folder (/app/data), and pick it under Settings → Sources → Custom M3U Sources. It's read again on every refresh, so a guide another program keeps writing stays current. If /app/data is a Docker volume (the default setup), mount a folder from your server at /app/data/custom-m3u or /app/data/custom-epg instead; the dashboard shows the line to add.
  • A redesigned Custom M3U Sources section. One table with an on/off switch for each source, one window to add or edit a source, and its guide as a single choice: the playlist's own, a URL, an uploaded file, or a file from your data folder.
  • Two new local markets: Buffalo, NY and Charleston–Huntington, WV. Choose one under Settings → Content → Local Market to get its ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX stations, for the live feed and the guide.
  • More in the dashboard. Each Multiview screen has a Refresh button, and with stream stats on, a channel's page shows them whenever the channel is playing anywhere, in Jellyfin, Plex or another app.

Jellyfin, Plex and other apps

  • Channels stay on while they wait. Since 1.4.7, a channel that took a few seconds to start showed the "Connecting to your channel" card and then closed: Jellyfin went back to the guide and Plex ended the session. The card now stays for as long as the wait lasts (starting, reconnecting, at your stream limit, or before a game) and the channel comes on by itself.
  • A channel uses one of your simultaneous streams only once it plays. A channel still starting, or trying sources that don't work, no longer counts, and a TV left on a channel that went dark no longer holds a stream forever.
  • Audio-only channels keep playing after the "Connecting" card instead of going silent.
  • HDHomeRun tuner fixes. Channels that share a number, or have none, now get their guide info; channel numbers in the tuner lineup no longer go stale; and custom channels tune without exposing their source's address on your network.
  • Players that load the guide from your playlist get it with an API key set.

Playback

  • Faster, more reliable starts. Channels and games go straight to their best working source, reuse a link that's still good instead of fetching a new one every time (which took over half a minute on some channels), try every stream server a game has, and get their full start-up time when their other sources are busy.
  • Fewer freezes, skips and jumps. Channels no longer jump back and replay a second every minute, freeze for a minute and a half when a source stops sending, freeze when an encrypted feed changes its key, stutter across ad breaks, or skip a moment between programmes. Game streams no longer skip a few seconds every minute, and channels left on for more than a day stay smooth.
  • Smoother switches to a backup source. No more 15-second blackout when the backup's sound is in another format, no needless reconnects when sources differ only in audio bitrate, and no silent tuner after a switch. A backup that's slow to start gets a fair chance, and one that keeps dying is set aside.
  • Channels start at live. A feed that keeps a long rewind window could start minutes or hours behind live; every channel now starts just your buffer's depth behind.
  • More streams play. Some broadcast-style streams that never showed a picture now play, channels that only play through one of their source's alternative players start again, and a fault in one stream can no longer stop every stream on your server.
  • Lighter streams. Live channels use about 6% less bandwidth, and your server uses less memory while you watch.

Channels

  • Online means it plays. A channel shows online only once a check has confirmed one of its sources works, and goes offline as soon as none does. A source that sends an empty stream, has lost its sound or uses a format your server can't deliver is caught and skipped for one that works.
  • Fewer false offlines. A restart, a slow or interrupted check, a source briefly refusing a connection, a changed or redirecting link, or a refreshed link that turned out broken no longer takes a working channel offline. The health check also no longer competes with your viewers for a source's connections.
  • More backup sources. Over 170 local stations and more UK and Canadian channels gained a source, and sources whose login contains characters such as !, # or a space play again.
  • The right channel, everywhere. A channel no longer plays another country's version of itself, channels dropped from the lineup stay dropped, and a channel that plays shows in your playlist and tuner lineup, not just the guide.
  • ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX follow your local station, even when you've hidden it: they go offline with it and come back with it.
  • Sources that move are followed without a restart, including a site that briefly shows a maintenance page.
  • Custom sources load and stay right. Large or slow playlists get up to three minutes to download, every version of a channel (FHD, HD, SD) gets its guide, and a deleted source stays deleted, even mid-load or while your server is busy.

Sports

  • Games stay on through their postgame. Your team's channel and the game's own channel carry the game until its postgame ends, including after overtime, extra innings or a rain delay, instead of stopping at the final whistle.
  • The first game of a doubleheader plays. The channel follows the game being played, then moves on to the next one.
  • Games find the right streams. A team listed by a short name is matched to the right game, a shared stream is no longer played before a game starts, newly found streams aren't lost between refreshes, a dead stream no longer shows as working, and a game no longer drops out of your lineup when one source fails to load. An oddly spelled event name from the Rebel relay no longer stops sports updating.
  • Tidier sports pages. Finished games leave the dashboard's Live & Upcoming list, a game is offered to play only where it has a working stream (the same on every page), and football and basketball pages no longer show a live drive after the final, a repeated last play or stale stats rows.

Guide

  • No more doubled-up programmes. A programme whose start time changed no longer shows twice in your players' guides.
  • ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX show one schedule everywhere: the network's own when the guide has one, otherwise your local station's.
  • A better dashboard Guide. It shows your custom channels, opens even during a refresh, and shows its whole last evening on servers behind UTC.
  • Movie posters survive a busy moment upstream, and Refresh guide refreshes the Rebel relay's guide on servers using it.

Dashboard

  • A steadier player. A paused channel picks up at live instead of freezing (and stops downloading after 10 minutes paused), the first picture shows sooner, a frozen picture recovers on its own, mute stays on through reconnects, and moving between pages no longer leaves the player stuck.
  • Error messages in your language. Errors, sign-in and setup messages and update hints now follow the dashboard language.
  • Regenerating or deleting the API key asks first, since either one breaks every link that uses the old key.
  • Settings that behave. Refresh buttons no longer stick on "Refreshing…", the sports switches apply at once, clearing a number field no longer saves a limit of 1, a cancelled drag puts the order back, and the setup wizard keeps a country on and notices when your channels arrive.
  • Accurate numbers. Watch time counts only what was watched, the guide coverage figure no longer goes past 100%, counts no longer flash to 0 during a refresh, and stream stats show your own buffer for as long as you watch.
  • And more: the dashboard loads faster, the Channel Lineup page lists channels in your players' order, Multiview's picker shows the games on now, and Arabic and Urdu layouts mirror properly.

Your server

  • Your data is safer. If your server can't read its saved data at startup, it now keeps it and tells you why instead of starting over, and saving recovers once you free space on a full disk. Saving and loading use far less memory, and the log warns you when the data folder can't be written.
  • More reliable in-app updates. Updates keep working after a rolled-back update, keep your data when nothing is mounted at /app/data, and work with rootless Docker or any other Docker socket path.
  • Your server recovers on its own from a badly timed network outage and from an unexpected error in a background job, and a server on the Rebel relay no longer rebuilds its channels unexpectedly after a restart.
  • Your API key and settings stay saved through a refresh or a busy moment.
  • The LEAGUES environment variable carries over on upgrade again, once; after that, choose leagues under Settings → Content → Sports.
  • Lighter on your hardware. Refreshes, guide downloads and large custom playlists use far less CPU and memory, and memory no longer creeps up with every refresh, which helps most on a NAS or a Raspberry Pi.

Update

Already running Rebel IPTV? Update to this version — your data (the iptv-data volume) is kept. From the dashboard, click Update now on the Dashboard or in Settings → Server (on the :latest image with the Docker socket mounted). Or from the command line:

docker pull rebeliptv/iptv:1.4.8
docker compose up -d

Setting up a new instance? The step-by-step guide at https://www.rebeliptv.com builds a Docker configuration for your system — ports, timezone, in-app updates, and more — so you copy a setup that fits your box instead of a generic one.
