Good call! I also like that the default now is non-nullable.

Can we add a check for the required attribute, and if found error with a "fields are required by default. use nullable for non-required fields"?

/// NOTE: We do not use flatbuffers' builtin `required` attribute because A) it has many
/// limitations that do not make sense for our use case and B) our overall data model is built
/// around the idea of nullability, rather than requirements (i.e. the exact opposite).
attribute "is_nullable";

minor nit: the name "is_nullable" for some reason makes me expect it to be a bool (order: 100, is_nullable: true), while the shorter "nullable" sounds more like a flag (order: 100, nullable)

Sh*t, I actually wanted to do this in this one but merged too quickly.

**COMMIT BY COMMIT!**

What the title says.

Adding support for sparse unions would be trivial, but nobody ever uses
those so I've refrained from doing it for now.

This PR appears to break TranslationRotationScale3D, which would benefit from having all its fields nullable:

include "arrow/attributes.fbs";
include "fbs/attributes.fbs";

include "./rotation3d.fbs";
include "./scale3d.fbs";
include "./vec3d.fbs";

namespace rerun.datatypes;

// ---

/// Representation of an affine transform via separate translation, rotation & scale.
table TranslationRotationScale3D (
  "attr.rust.derive": "Copy, PartialEq",
  order: 600
) {
  /// 3D translation vector, applied last.
  translation: rerun.datatypes.Vec3D (nullable, order: 100);

  /// 3D rotation, applied second.
  rotation: rerun.datatypes.Rotation3D (order: 200);

  /// 3D scale, applied first.
  scale: rerun.datatypes.Scale3D (order: 300);

  /// If true, the transform maps from the parent space to the space where the transform was logged.
  /// Otherwise, the transform maps from the space to its parent.
  from_parent: bool = false (order: 400);
}

Adding nullable to rotation and/or scale yields the following error:

thread 'main' panicked at 'nullable unions cannot be represented in Arrow, found one at "rerun.datatypes.TranslationRotationScale3D#scale"', /Users/hhip/src/rerun/crates/re_types_builder/src/objects.rs:137:21

That error feels just wrong though, from using the v1 API:

rr.log_transform3d("foo", rr.TranslationRotationScale3D())
image

Am I missing something?

You're right, this should definitely be legal in this instance: while we cannot express nullability on the union itself, we can certainly piggyback on the validity bitmap of the parent struct here.

Come to think of it, since we always have a mandatory table layer first and foremost for our components, I'm not even sure there's any way one could end up with a nullable union using our IDL in the first place 🤔.

I'll have a deeper look on monday, in the meantime you should be fine if you just get rid of the check on your local copy, right?

I'll give it a try tomorrow 👍🏻 For now I've undertook the writing of a novel to describe what's going on with python codegen.

### What

This PR adds support for `Transform3D` to the new-gen Python SDK,
including:
- adding the relevant fbs
- implementing codegen'd union types
- adding all required hand-coded overrides
- adding typed-checked test to demonstrate/assess API
- full typing compliance for both mypy and pyright (required
`disallow_untyped_calls = False` in `.mypy.ini`)

**Note**:
- The `from_parent` field is moved from `Transform3D` to both
`Translation*` objects, to comply with the 1-comp-1-datatype rule.
- The `from_parent` field has been made `nullable` though it has a
default value, which are not yet implemented (#2641).

TODO:
- [x] arrow serialisation (basic, to be tested)
- [x] `rr.arch.Transform3D()` serialisation tests
- [x] default types (`from_parent`) (including proper field sorting)
- [x] ~~`ruff --fix` seems to always fail~~ (config error on my side)

TODO @teh-cmc and/or @jleibs :
- [x] deal with commented-out hack in `rerun_py/src/arrow.rs`
- [x] fix Rust codegen
- [x] fix restriction on nullable union (see discussion in #2619)
- [x] teach me how to properly indent text (in `python.rs`)

### Overview & Highlights
- `log_pinhole` is now easier to use in simple cases and supports
non-RDF camera coordinates.
[#2614](#2614)
- You only need to set focal length and optional principal point instead
of setting the full 3x3 matrix.
- There is also a new argument: `camera_xyz` for setting the coordinate
system. The default is RDF (the old
default). This affects the visible camera frustum, how rays are
projected when hovering a 2D image, and how depth
   clouds are projected.
- The visualizer can now show coordinate arrows for all affine
transforms within the view.
[#2577](#2577)
- Linestrips and oriented bounding boxes can now be logged via batch
APIs in python.
- See: `log_linestrips_2d`, `log_linestrips_3d`,
[#2822](#2822) and `log_obbs`
[#2823](#2823)
- Rust users that build their own Viewer applications can now add fully
custom Space Views. Find more information
[here](https://www.rerun.io/docs/howto/extend-ui#custom-space-views-classes).
- New optional `flush_timeout` specifies how long Rerun will wait if a
TCP stream is disconnected during a flush.
[#2821](#2821)
- In Rust, `RecordingStream::connect` now requires `flush_timeout`
specified as an `Option<Duration>`.
- To keep default behavior, this can be specified using the
`rerun::default_flush_time()` helper.
- In Python `flush_init_sec` is now an optional argument to
`rr.connect()`
- In Rust, the `RecordingStream` now offers a stateful time API, similar
to the Python APIs. [#2506](#2506)
- You can now call `set_time_sequence`, `set_time_seconds`, and
`set_time_nanos` directly on the `RecordingStream`,
     which will set the time for all subsequent logs using that stream.
- This can be used as an alternative to the the previous
`MsgSender::with_time` APIs.
- The Rerun SDK now defaults to 8ms long microbatches instead of 50ms.
This makes the default behavior more suitable
for use-cases like real-time video feeds.
[#2220](#2220)
- Check out [the microbatching
docs](https://www.rerun.io/docs/reference/sdk-micro-batching) for more
information
   on fine-tuning the micro-batching behavior.
- The web viewer now incremental loads `.rrd` files when streaming over
HTTP. [#2412](#2412)

### Ongoing Refactors
- There have been a number of significant internal changes going on
during this release with little visible impact.
This work will land across future releases, but is highlighted here
since much of it is visible through the
   changelog.
- The layout of the Viewer is now controlled by a Blueprint datastore.
In the future this will allow for direct API
control of the layout and configuration of the Viewer. A very early
prototype of this functionality is available
    via the `rerun.experimental` module in Python.
- An entirely new code-generation framework has been brought online for
Rust, Python and C++. This will eventually enable
new object-centric APIs with a more scalable, consistent, and ergonomic
experience.
- Bringup of C++ support is now underway and will eventually become our
third officially supported SDK language.

### Known Regressions
- Due to the Blueprint storage migration, blueprint persistence on web
is currently broken. Will be resolved in:
