markdown-modern 2.1.0

@rjprins rjprins released this 01 Nov 10:02

This release needs no setup changes. It adds a Mermaid diagram viewer, local file links and reference links, and fixes nested lists.

Thanks to Hemant Kumar (@gnufied) for local file links and two fixes, and to Samuel Michael Vanie (@SamuelVanie) for the Mermaid work.

  • Click a Mermaid diagram, or press C-c C-v d in its source, to open it in a viewer. You can zoom and pan there.
  • Mermaid flowcharts, sequence, state, class and ER diagrams draw more correctly. A diagram with a feature the renderer cannot draw, such as a subgraph, shows its source instead of a partial diagram.
  • Local links open files in Emacs, relative to the Markdown file. #L352 and #L352-L365 go to that line. M-, goes back.
  • Reference links render: [text][label], [text][] and [label]. Definition lines are dimmed.
  • Nested list items show their bullet, number or checkbox again. Since 2.0.0 only the first level had one.
  • Fix bold italic text that disappeared, line breaks next to inline code, and wrapped list text that did not line up.
  • Fix C-c ' opening an empty buffer, and a link click that showed the link's markup first.
  • Check all 313 tests on Emacs 30.1 and 31.1.

This release requires Tree-sitter. After upgrading, run M-x markdown-modern-install-grammars once and remove any markdown-modern-ts--use-tree-sitter setting from your init file.

  • Require Tree-sitter for editing and rendering. The regex fallback is gone.
  • Add M-x markdown-modern-install-grammars. It builds version 0.4.1 of both Markdown grammars, which also works with Tree-sitter libraries older than 0.25.
  • Show source newlines inside a paragraph as spaces, so text fills the window width. A paragraph you edit shows its real lines, with a ↵ where they will join. Hard breaks stay. Set markdown-modern-join-paragraph-lines to nil to keep lines as written, in general or for one file.
  • TAB in the last cell of a table adds a new row. TAB and S-TAB now stop in empty cells.
  • Fix code-block editing so abort restores the original text.
  • Check all 214 tests on Emacs 30.1 and 31.1. CI also tests the newest upstream grammars every month.

You need Git and a C compiler to build the grammars. On Windows, the README explains how to get a compiler.

Tables stay rendered while you edit, with the active row kept aligned to the rest of the grid. Wide cells wrap to fit the window.

  • Reveal list, blockquote and heading markers at point. Toggle task checkboxes with Space and remove them with Backspace or Delete.
  • Fix tree-sitter rendering and reveal behavior on Emacs 31.
  • Check all 242 tests on Emacs 30.1 and 31.1. CI also checks the regex fallback and runs monthly.
  • Build versioned tarballs, check fresh installs and fail on compilation or package-lint errors.
  • Add tree-sitter setup instructions, a refreshed screenshot and a MELPA recipe build command.
