Pop Dictionary v2.1.2
New name: Pop Dictionary
ColorDict is now Pop Dictionary, so the home-screen icon and the app's name change. Nothing else changes: your saved words, connotations and API key are kept, and e-book readers that use the ColorDict lookup intent still open the popup.
Install
Download pop-dictionary-debug.apk below. It installs as an update over any v2 release. (The old colordict-debug.apk link still works and is the same app.)
ColorDict v2.1.1
Smoother popup
The quick-lookup popup now behaves like a proper bottom sheet, with the sheet and the entry moving as one continuous gesture:
- Swipe up and the sheet follows your finger until it's fully open; keep going in the same swipe and the entry scrolls.
- Swipe down and the entry scrolls back to the top first, then the sheet follows your finger down to its short position.
- Swipe down again from the short position to close it.
- Let go mid-way and it settles smoothly to the nearest position, following the direction of your flick. Back also shrinks an open sheet before closing it.
Install
Download colordict-debug.apk below. It installs as an update over v2.0.0 or v2.1.0 and keeps your saved words and API key.
ColorDict v2.1.0
What's new
- Popup expands as you scroll: the quick-lookup popup opens short with the top meanings. Scroll or drag up and it grows to nearly full screen with the full entry, still over what you're reading. Drag the handle down to shrink it, and again to close.
- "See full entry" moved from a sticky button to a link at the end of the meanings.
- Words not in the built-in dictionary: tap Look up with Claude to get the meaning and connotation in one go (slang, new words, names, abbreviations). The answer is saved, so the word opens instantly next time, labelled as written by Claude.
Install
Download colordict-debug.apk below and open it. It installs as an update over v2.0.0 and keeps your saved words and API key.
ColorDict v2.0.0
A complete rebuild: a clean, offline English dictionary with a quick-lookup popup, and connotations from Claude when you want them.
What's new
- Built-in dictionary: about 150,000 English words with pronunciation, numbered meanings, examples, synonyms and opposites. Instant, offline and free (Open English WordNet 2024, CMU Pronouncing Dictionary).
- Check connotation: tap it on any word and Claude explains how the word feels to people (tone, a short explanation, descriptors and when it can come across differently). It's saved with the word, so next time it's already there. Uses your own Anthropic API key (Settings → API key).
- Redesigned popup: select text in any app and tap Define to get a bottom sheet with the meaning; swipe down to close. E-book readers that use the ColorDict lookup intent keep working.
- Smarter search: suggestions as you type, inflected forms find their base word (geese → goose, ran → run), and typos get "Did you mean" suggestions.
- Recent and Saved word lists, copy, share, text-to-speech, and light and dark themes.
Install
Download colordict-debug.apk below and open it on your phone (Android 8.0 or newer). The first lookup takes a few seconds while the dictionary unpacks.
If an earlier ColorDict is installed and Android says the app isn't compatible or the package conflicts, uninstall the old version first. That's a one-time step: from this version on, every release is signed with the same key and installs as an update.
The release-unsigned APK is for people who want to sign it with their own key.
Pop Up Dictionary v1.4.1
Ready-to-install debug APK (install this one directly on your device) and an unsigned release APK (sign it with your own key before distributing).

Pop Up Dictionary v1.3.0

Pop Up Dictionary v1.2.0
Pop Up Dictionary v1.2.0
The dictionary now tells you when it has nothing to say, and lets you say so back.
What changed for a reader
- Report a word. Every sense without a connotation note now reads
"Connotations: not recorded - report this word". Tap it and the word goes
into a local list. Nothing is sent anywhere: the list lives on your device,
you can remove anything from it, and it only leaves when you choose
Settings > Reported words > Send and pick where it goes. Those reports are
how the next words get annotated. - Inflected forms resolve. emerged, markets, skinnier now find their
entries. The index went from 4,491 forms to 67,700. - No more machine-guessed connotations. 30,545 senses used to show a
"positive" or "negative" badge that came from a statistical prior, not from
anyone's judgement. Only authored notes show now - 3,403 of them, each read
blind by a second model and measured at about 2% error. - Open English WordNet 2025. 111,332 entries. Every authored note was
re-checked against the new edition and all 2,885 still bind to a live sense
with an unchanged gloss.
Install: the debug APK below installs directly. The release APK is unsigned.
Privacy, unchanged: free, offline, no ads, no tracking. The report list is a
file on your phone and it stays there until you send it.
Pop Up Dictionary 1.1.0
The app gets its own name, icon and Compose-based UI, and now ships with a complete English dictionary built in.
Install the debug APK (colordict-debug.apk) — it is signed and installs directly on your device. The release APK is unsigned and meant for developers who want to sign it themselves.
What's new
- Pop Up English Dictionary bundled — 111,466 headwords derived from Open English WordNet 2024 and SentiWordNet 3.0. No download or setup; search works offline the moment the app opens.
- Connotation layer — 781 senses across 922 entries carry a hand-reviewed note on the word's force, its position on its family's spectrum from disparaging to approving, and register labels. Reviewed senses are marked; the rest are labelled as automatically derived.
- New name, icon and UI — a Compose design system behind the main screen, with a browse list that gains Material icons, a tokenised divider and a chevron the old row lacked.
- Fixes — status-bar inset overlap on Android 15, and UTF-8 source encoding for the desktop harness.

ColorDict v1.0.0
