v1.3.2
SHA-256: e72c617482a3f360d5067a4767f94be672a4228f89b25ceee1736714231a1f80
Releases are now signed with a stable identity, so permissions survive future updates. After this one update you may need to re-allow Accessibility once.
v1.3.1
v1.3.0
SHA-256: 4305d6bd821ef204879459f2f04442050db238eefd7296c3e0b9a1e5f959fa6d
Disable SmartHiddenBar in the right-click menu: nothing is hidden at all, always-hidden apps included, as if the app had quit, until you pick Enable SmartHiddenBar. While disabled the icon is dimmed and any click opens the menu. The state survives a relaunch.
v1.2.1
SHA-256: e4bd2f5fbc78d1718de90a0ec83879d882dd372a9a2e3fa7ebac0fe665056606
New menu bar apps show up without the whole bar flashing. Apps that macOS itself keeps off the bar (System Settings → Menu Bar → "Allow in the Menu Bar" off) are now named in the log.
v1.2.0
SHA-256: 92f0e5518953344079b90fb36636d071fe0d54c8ea93200b8c94f537966b3030
Icon bar:
- Adjustable icon size: Settings → Hidden items → "Icon size in icon bar" (16–48 pt, default 24; was a fixed 18).
- Hover an icon to see its app name.
- Right-click an icon opens its menu, same as a left click (over Accessibility, third-party menu bar items only offer a press, so a separate right-click menu can't be reached).
v1.1.3
SHA-256: a84e5f2bc3082eef0e7afcb027e65d9fad0ca4fd5cd602fa1e5ba5f5568156a6
Fixes:
- Launch no longer stops at "Move SmartHiddenBar to /Applications" when another copy of the app (a build folder, Downloads) wins the LaunchServices lookup: the duplicate is unregistered and the /Applications copy starts.
- A menu bar app launched while hiding is active now appears (macOS kept its icon off the bar even once allowed).
- Settings → Always hidden list refreshes when menu bar apps launch or quit; uninstalled apps drop off it.
v1.1.2
v1.1.1
SmartHiddenBar 1.1.0
SHA-256: 3476c442436b248d8b22963111906c0e2ac7ad8c9a974c706ac50fa70b681bc5
What's new
- Click mode per display: show → icon bar → hide (default on the built-in display), show / hide (default on external displays), or icon bar only. Clicks act at once; double click is gone.
- Always hidden: apps that stay off the bar even while items are shown, reachable from the icon bar. Optionally, new menu bar apps go straight onto the list.
- Auto-rehide when the pointer leaves the menu bar.
- Hover or click empty menu bar space to show / hide (both optional, in Settings → General).
- Notification Center works while hiding: clicking the clock lifts hiding until Notification Center closes.
- Faster hiding: applies at once from the last scan; the menu bar scan runs in parallel.
Fixes
- Quit in the right-click menu was disabled.
- Clicking the icon while the icon bar was open reopened the bar instead of hiding.
After updating, re-grant Accessibility (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility: toggle SmartHiddenBar off and on). The app is ad-hoc signed, so every update needs it.
SmartHiddenBar 1.0.0
SHA-256: 7e9fc4856939abaf257d1d691addc0d3998178cdaf92de7bb692888ba6c05ad2
First public release. Requires macOS 27.
- One click hides every menu bar item left of SmartHiddenBar's icon (⌘-drag to choose).
- Icon bar with everything off the bar: ⌥-click, double-click, or ⌃⌥B (recordable).
- Right-click: Show/Hide items · Apps ▸ (every third-party menu bar app — use its menu without unhiding it) · Settings… · Quit.
- Optional real menu bar icons (Screen Recording), auto-rehide, launch at login, five recordable shortcuts.
Install: brew install --cask roypadina/tap/smarthiddenbar
Ad-hoc signed, not notarized — see the README for the first-launch step. Must run from /Applications. Grant Accessibility on first launch, and re-grant it after each update.
